About This Pipe
While his smooth pipes are always impressive, showcasing either perfectly oriented cross-cut patterns or particularly choice displays of straight and flame grain, Lasse Skovgaard's sandblasts are some of the best on the market, in my opinion. The sheer amount of texture and grain he can pull out from a block of briar speaks not only to his skill with this particular style of finish, but it showcases his discerning eye for briar selection and grain orientation in respect to the overall form. Just look at the density and consistent pattern of the growth rings on this bent Egg. Observe how each undulating layer practically hugs the bowl's supple curves while actually highlighting the shape's natural lines — guiding the eye up to the plateau crown and along the upward flicking arc of the shank. It's a study in how to sandblast a pipe... and just a beautiful piece of functional art.
