Log In to Get StartedHow we value your pipes
Offers are based on what we expect to recover at resale, weighing condition, market demand, desirability, and your preferred payout. Because cleaning and listing carry fixed costs, value tiers work like this:
Expected Value: Under $40
Usually declined
Fixed cleaning and listing costs make low-value briar and meerschaum uneconomical for us.
Expected Value: $40 – $70
Sliding rate
The percentage we offer scales with the pipe's value across this range.
Expected Value: Over $70
Standard rates
Typically around 40% for cash, or 55% when you take store credit.
Payout your way. Take a company check mailed to you, or apply the value to your House Account as store credit — a popular way to fund your next pipe or tin.
Good to know
What counts as an estate pipe?
An estate pipe is simply one that's been previously owned. Every estate pipe we sell goes through a thorough cleaning and disinfecting regimen before it's listed. They're generally far less expensive than a comparable new pipe — an excellent value, and often the only affordable way to try makers you couldn't otherwise reach.
Do you accept trades?
Sort of. Once we've assessed your pipes and made an offer, that amount can be applied to a new purchase. Items can be placed on hold in the interim while you decide.
What won't you purchase?
We don't buy corn cob or clay pipes, or any pipe containing ivory. We also generally pass on pipes needing serious repair — replacement stems or tenons, or substantial damage to the briar. When we do buy a pipe intending to repair it, a lower percentage applies to cover that work.
We reserve the right to decline any item for any reason (cracks, breaks, excessive alterations, missing pieces, and the like), and we don't negotiate a pipe's value once assessed — except where we've obviously erred. We're human, after all.
Can you repair my pipe or replace a stem?
We don't offer repair services, so we can't repair or replace stems, shanks, or similar on site. Reach out, though, and we're glad to recommend reputable repair specialists who'd welcome your business.
How does the evaluation and response work?
Once your pipes arrive, evaluation typically takes five to ten business days depending on batch size. We'll send you a calculated cash and store-credit value for each pipe before taking any further action. From there, you can:
- Have everything returned at no cost (domestic)
- Apply the credit to your House Account
- Request a company check mailed to your preferred address
