About This Pipe
Completely sandblasted except for the the top of the bowl, this Lasse Skovgaard displays parallel growth rings on the right side, transforming to birdseye on the left. That birdseye transforms to a thumbprint of horizontal grain on the rim, containing super-fine, angel-hair grain. The rest of the smooth top is dynamic birdseye except for slightly angled grain along the right side. The visual weight of the pipe is thrown forward by the long, limber stem. There is little shank to this pipe, but the end leaps upward, following the lines that gradually develop along the heel and curving in harmony with the shape. Skovgaard is a master at using grain to its full advantage, and this superb Freehand is evidence of that ingenuity.
