About This Pipe

"Foot" shapes, whether of the Elephant or Duck variety, should be no strangers to fans of Peter Heding; he's produced a fair number of them. Looking in our archives, circa 2006 he was largely concentrating on those with more flare up top and a pronounced curve and taper to the bowl, but since 2008 we've seen considerably more variation, from softer forms, to slimmer forms, to one case, just last year, of an Elephant's Foot rendered as a towering sitter.

This is of the slimmer sort, and in fact comes closest to the aforementioned sitter in terms of trimness of profile - albeit with much more in the way of curving lines to the flanks and soft roundness to the forward face. The two also share a close overall height, though in this case a significant amount of that is placed in the rising flick of the rims forward edge, as opposed to the other's extension at the heel.

While the sitter was a Diamond-grade (and had the grain to back it up), and this one is a "mere" Gold, personally I'd give the nod to this design, as a design; the sense of flow and counter-flow, natural taper and arrangement of mass, is just ideal to my eye.
