About This Pipe
David Iafisco draws from a wide array of influences, including Teddy Knudsen, Claudio Cavicchi, Jeff Gracik, and Adam Davidson. That breadth of inspiration is evident in his portfolio, which spans everything from expressive Freehand designs to faithful renditions of classic shape-chart standards. Regardless of form, however, Iafisco's work is consistently defined by a keen sense of proportion and a masterful approach to finishing, both of which take center stage in his compositions.
This bent Egg is a particularly fluid example of his style, pairing a sinuous shank-and-stem arrangement with a full-bodied bowl at the fore. The bowl rises from a gently lifted heel and tapers subtly toward the rim, its rounded waist offering a comfortable, natural fit in hand. A slight forward cant, combined with the graceful curvature through the rear, lends the overall profile a sense of motion and balance.
True to Iafisco's aesthetic, the finish is striking. A smoky, contrast-rich smooth treatment highlights the briar's natural beauty, with dense birdseye populating the flanks and cross grain sweeping across the fore and aft. The warm tones of the stummel are further complemented by a cumberland stem, completing a composition that is as visually captivating as it is thoughtfully executed.
