Smooth Grainbug Tobacco Pipe

I remember the first time I decided to peruse Dirk Heinemann's portfolio, as I was instantly awestruck at his incredible ability to render classic and naturalistic Danish and Japanese shapes, all interspersed within his own signature designs which take on a far more architectural, sculptural aspect. With a master's degree in design, it is no wonder that Heinemann is able to create such pipes, and while his designs are truly singular, in my opinion, few are as compelling as this: the Grainbug. Despite being one of his signature profiles, this shape is something of a rarity, one we've only seen a handful of times in the past and that's sure to appeal to enthusiasts of Heinemann's work.

I don't think I can readily compare this shape to anything else, save perhaps Heinemann's Architect, and even then the similarities are scant, with this piece possessed of a far more organic styling, reminiscent of a pill-bug in the midst of its defensive roll, or perhaps a Cobra reared fully back, ready to strike and with its hood at its full extension. The entirety of the briar is carved in a curved arc, with dual ridgelines at either flank, separating the stummel into two halves, with the top a languid flow from the "heel" to the edge of the rim, and the bottom far more swift, pinched inward, and lifted at the edges of the ridges. I say "heel" because the entirety of this piece rests, literally, on the foremost flat plane on the bottom of the pipe, a display of expert balance by the artisan, especially considering this pipe's subtle, yet expressive asymmetrical styling. The rim is chamfered, and leads to a petite chamber excellent for sampling and sipping tobacco, something made all the more comfortable by the gentle downturn of the hand-cut and funneled vulcanite stem. Dressed in one of Heinemann's expert contrast stains and a lightly glossy finish, this pipe showcases stunning grain throughout, with the back side of the stummel revealing a swirling ocean of birdseye to appreciate.
