About This Pipe
So far from Russian artisan Roman Kovalev, we've received a couple of Buddha bamboo-infused pieces, a few of his signature Horn variants, a number of Whales, Fish, and other aquatic animals, and even a strawberry wood churchwarden. As you might have already guessed, the defining trend seems to be his willingness to experiment with novel forms and mediums, as well as a deft ability to realize them with aplomb. But as for straightforward designs plucked from the classic shape charts? Well, this is the first one.
Sure we've seen a fair few Billiards from Kovalev thus far, but they've all been rather organic, dynamic, avant-garde interpretations. This variant, however, to my eye at least, falls more along the lines of the Italian neoclassical school — with a heavy visual weight placed on the bowl, and no shortage of titanium alloy along the spigot mount either, which conveniently enough features a push-style stem for quick and easy cleaning. The result is a firm and capacious briar with a classic silhouette, particularly charming here finished in a dark walnut contrast — a finish which, I might add, excels at highlighting this block's impressive display of flame.
