About This Pipe
Without the dual finish that Alex incorporated into this piece, it would be difficult to discern how the title "Cup and Ball" exactly applies to this shape. It's readily understandable, however, thanks to the bowl and shank's contrasting stains. The teardrop shank tapers gradually toward the transition, terminating in a crisp, beveled line at the base of the bowl, making it seem as if the bowl and shank are two separate pieces, with the latter simply holding the former. Despite the crisp ridgelines, this piece is incredibly comfortable in hand, as the Ball bowl conforms well to wrapped fingers and the easy transition provides a natural thumb rest. The grain is exquisite as well: the shank's underside is filled with birdseye, separated from cross grain by the teardrop line. Stunning work from Florov.
