Smooth Fugu with Bamboo (2026) Tobacco Pipe

As a student of the craft, Jared Coles produces a wide assortment of pipe shapes — everything from Anglo-French classics to organic Freehands. His expansive pipe-making knowledge is aptly represented by this Fugu — a specifically Japanese take on the classic Blowfish shape — whose playfully asymmetric ridgelines and lopsided bowl embody the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi.

Wabi-sabi, at its most basic, embraces imperfection: the asymmetrical, the incomplete, the organic, and the weathered. With its elegant touch of rugged plateau, skewed disk-like flanks, and uneven rim, this Fugu delivers imperfection in a perfectly elegant manner, its naturalistic design details culminating in a highly sculptural shape with an eye-catching silhouette.

Heightening its organic aesthetic, three knuckles of vibrant bamboo extend the shank. Each of the dense grass' nodes are evenly spaced from the transition to the shoulders of the saddle stem, creating a visual symmetry across the aft that balances the freeform nature of the fore. A gorgeous smooth finish completes the ensemble, highlighting a gorgeous showing of cross grain across the bowl's fore, aft, top and bottom, and dense fields of birdseye across the flanks.
