About This Pipe
Jody Davis, renowned not only for his musical career but also for his pipe making, produces briars that rank among the finest crafted today. Like many American artisans, Davis favors compact compositions that prioritize substance and presence over length — a sensibility clearly expressed in this Volcano, which measures just over five inches yet feels notably robust and assured in hand.
This piece presents a distinctive, asymmetrical take on the classic form, shaped by two teardrop lines — one tracing the underside of the bowl and the other sweeping along the shank's face. These pronounced, spur-like points create a sense of lopsidedness when viewed from above or below, lending the design a dynamic, off-center character, while the side profile reads as boldly structured and muscular. The Volcano's characteristic taper is rendered here with dramatic emphasis, tempered by the fluid curvature of the shank and stem. A crisp, natural sandblast envelops the stummel, revealing striking grain throughout, and is complemented by a cocobolo accent at the base of the saddle stem, its warm tones echoing those of the briar.
