Sandblasted Dublin with Bamboo (Kikuchi) (E) (010) (2019) Tobacco Pipe

It's always impressive to receive two pieces of the same general shape, yet in markedly different style, both from the same carver. This is one of two Dublins featured in today's update of Tsuge Ikebana pipes, and each one was fashioned by Asami Kikuchi, who comprises the Japanese workshop alongside Kazuhiro Fukuda.

The Dublin seen here is in every sense the complete opposite of the other. While the other Dublin is plump and rounded of line, clearly designed with organicism in mind, this piece is arrow straight and streamlined, catering toward the classic Danish interpretation. It is lent a slight, natural touch thanks to the three knuckles of bamboo extending the shank, but overall the profile is defined by crisp lines and a rigid flare toward the rim. Kikuchi has dressed it in a sandblast that showcases concentric ripples of ring grain overlapped by vertical striations, and the rim accents the finish wonderfully, gently inflated per Danish tradition and stained a smooth, walnut hue. It's a testament to Asami's diverse talent as a carver and a worthy piece for those interested in handmade Japanese pipes.
