About This Pipe

This is the first "drunken" shape we've received from the venerable artisans at Tsuge Ikebana, and it's no surprise that it's the work of Yoshirou Ohi, the carver being Ikebana's most acutely associated with complex linework. Complex is right, but what strikes me the most is how precise it remains, while still retaining a consistent, readily identifiable charm. The rolling base of the bowl's beveled rim succinctly divides the regions of ring-grain and blasted birdseye, framing the contrast-stained inner-rim. The lightest hint of smooth polish about the mortise is visible in profile, lending the composition an even more understated, mysterious dynamism.
