About This Pipe
Roman Kovalev consistently pushes the boundaries of what's considered conventional when it comes to pipe-accent work and is renowned for his use of wildly eccentric bamboo sections. This Brandy showcases the Russian carver's more traditional side as it features a more evenly-spaced, uniform piece of bamboo. While there's some subtle asymmetry in its knuckle orientation, it's still one of Roman's more conservative bamboo accents, appealing to those who appreciate more classic bamboo-adorned pipes, while remaining readily recognizable as Kovalev's signature aesthetic.
The use of a less eccentric piece of bamboo does an excellent job of drawing focus toward the plump, tapering bowl, which is dressed in a stunning sandblast. Perfect, uniform waves of ring grain surround the bowl's flanks while the rim is left smooth, providing subtle textural contrast. A more understated bamboo accent suits this piece wonderfully as it doesn't distract from the sublime finishing work. Those drawn to sandblasted finishes will undoubtedly appreciate this piece, and the subtle contrast of the stain only brings out the blasted texture even more. Plus, this composition measures just over four-and-a-half inches in length, making it even more tempting to pipe smokers who prefer compact, Nosewarmers as well as lightweight, easily clenchable designs. This piece rightfully earned its Double Flash designation, the Russian carver's second highest, and testifies to Kovalev's immense creativity and talent.
