About This Pipe
From stubby, compact nosewarmers to more streamlined, Art Deco variations, the Bulldog shape is one design with which Werner Mummert has experimented quite a lot over the years. As far as scale goes, this particular example falls somewhere in the middle, being quite tight-knit of substance yet not quite as compact as some of his more exaggerated numbers. While Mummert's maintained the shape's signature sharp lines along the diamond shank and underside, he's lent an additional aesthetic cue here as well, shaping the rim into well-defined, almost sharp undulations, rippling around its circumference like a merry-go-round — up and down, up and down. To really drive that aesthetic home, he even finished it in a deep crimson stain to contrast further with the darker, nearly jet-black rest of the stummel. Of course, he's made sure to tie it all together beautifully, fashioning a mouthpiece from warm, red and cream colored brindled vulcanite for a nice aesthetic balance. Stellar ring grain at play here as well.
