About This Pipe
Werner Mummert appears to have been playing up contrast in this piece: the hard and direct style of shape and the pale, desaturated tone of the briar, against the soft, warm, darker and richer colors of the stem, and the short, smoothly shaped and patterned nature of the stem against the long-shanked briar with its deep, sweeping sandblast. It's not as bold as many Mummerts I've seen, even in shaping (just see the other Bulldog in this same update), but when it comes to contrast, Werner really did work a lot into this one.
