About This Pipe

Born in São Paulo, Brazil, Luiz Lavos spent much of his time growing up in his grandfather's woodworking workshop and gained an affinity for the craft. When Lavos began carving pipes, he connected with several pipe making legends, such as Sabina Santos, Premal Chheda, and Hans "Former" Nielsen, and was able to draw on their knowledge to improve every aspect of his pipes. Now an excellent pipe maker in his own right, Lavos commonly crafts traditional Danish shapes and prioritizes function over flashy accents, although he occasionally incorporates organic materials into his designs.

This Acorn by Luiz Lavos possesses a supple bowl, its flared walls ascending from a plump, defined heel to a gently inflated rim. Furthermore, the rim is asymmetrical, as the aft forms a soft peak that gives the bowl a jaunty look in profile. Out back, the shank emerges from a mid-set transition, bending upward as it flares to the broad stem base that is marked by an eye-catching jupati accent. From there, the trim saddle stem gently arcs to a trim bit, completing the profile's subtle sinuousness. Moreover, the stummel is dressed in a vivid mahogany stain and a low-depth, detailed sandblast, highlighting thin strands of flame grain and the wiry growth rings, their perpendicular orientation creating an intriguing, cross-hatched texture.
