Smooth Tulip (Snail) Tobacco Pipe

While Tom Eltang often features and plays with a sense of flowing organicism in his work, this Freehand Tulip is one of the most overtly floral we've encountered from the Danish master. It's an immaculate example of stunning briar, sublime shaping, and deft craftsmanship — each element having to align perfectly to create the result we see here; any flaw in the briar or misstep in the line work would render the design imbalanced and unworthy of Tom's prestigious Snail grade.

Shape-wise, it clearly evokes the form of the flower after which it's named, the ridge lines along each flank separating fore from aft to resemble the fluting petals. The rim echoes this sprouting inclination as the foremost portion rises slightly higher than the aft, divided by a crisp crease through the middle. Sinuously curved, the transition offers a delightfully comfortable in-hand feel, and the upward-flicking nature of the curled shank end provides the base from which flows the piece's forward momentum. Gorgeous grain covers the stummel, the birdseye-studded fore being the highlight, and the stem balances the composition, the edges of the base matching perfectly with the shank end's ridge-lined curl. Beautifully ambitious work from Tom, it's been executed exquisitely.
