About This Pipe
Smokingpipes began hosting the American Pipe Making Expo in 2015, soliciting submissions from North America's premier carvers and affording them the opportunity to showcase their most inventive and creative work. For 2024, to celebrate the Expo's 10th anniversary, we've expanded our scope to accommodate carvers from all over the world, turning the American Pipe Making Expo into the Global Pipe Making Expo. Like in years past, the 2024 Expo revolves around a core theme, and appropriately, given the event's birthday, we've returned to our very first Expo's theme: bamboo.
Even within his portfolio of architectural, Freehand-inspired designs, the Tuban is perhaps Dirk Heinemann's most conspicuous signature shape, somewhat paradoxically, given the composition's seamless, gradually unfurling profile and uniform lines. But this pared-down simplicity makes the Tuban an exceptional standout: its refined shaping being not a novelty, but an expansive canvas from which to showcase Heinemann's mastery of line and form. This particular rendition, fittingly, is carved to resemble a thick piece of bamboo, a look that suits the tubular stummel and adds a rich tactile detail to the otherwise minimalist form. Additionally, Heinemann has topped this Nosewarmer with one of his signature Juma stems, the mouthpiece's creamy hues complementing the warm stain of the stummel.
