Sandblasted Bent Egg with Boxwood Tobacco Pipe

This bent Egg from Adam Davidson is an exercise in shifting geometry from rim to shank-end. Forgoing the typically elongated gesture showcased in a number of his bent Egg renditions, here Adam chose to position the bowl's wide waistline a bit further up, closer to the rim. This consolidates more visual weight around the equator, while allowing the blasted ring-grain to bolster it gently from below. It also allowed Adam to cant the chamfered rim forward a little more, while countering that choice with more visual weight at the bowl's aft.

Past the neatly-tucked transition, things get slightly more gradual. The shank is on par with the muscularity of the carver's other works, and the spread of rippling rings gently guides the eye to a ring of pale boxwood. Here, the devil's in the details: though appearing at first to be a simple, gently rounded sort of accent, it actually serves to delicately continue the gradual flare initiated at the transition, achieving this by way of a minute repositioning of the boxwood's convex curve to be ever-so-slightly closer to the stem base. The saddle bit's disc-like base gives the boxwood a touch of space, allowing this effect to come into clear focus upon closer inspection. Really neat work.
