Smooth Bulldog (E) (179) (2016) Tobacco Pipe

The Bulldog isn't a shape we see much of from Tsuge Ikebana's workshop. Based on this one, that's a shame. Low-slung and almost Saucer-like, this compact form sports some interesting contrasts. The lower line of shank and bowl base is tight and defined, while the one above has been smoothed, creating a rather more supple look. Similarly, the line of the heel has been softened, moving to the bowl's base more as a slight shift, rather than a firm line. For a shape that is traditionally sturdy, broad, and muscular, this interpretation is rather sleek and streamlined in comparison, and took no little amount of skill. Recommended.
