About This Pipe
The Bulldog is something of a signature shape for Scott Thile. He often uses chooses a tapering shank leading to a tapering mouthpiece for Bulldogs, and here we see that element beautifully executed. The transition is very, very tight, maintaining the shape of the bowl even as it meets the shank. The transition is among the most difficult aspects of a pipe to carve well, and Thile does so in breathtaking fashion.
The bowl is dramatically canted, its waistline a crisp ridgeline below which circle two crisp beadlines in a tripartite display. Rising from a forward-urging heel, the bowl expands upward to that ridgeline and then tapers quickly to the rim. A contrast stain elegantly highlights a mesmerizing array of grain, adding to the elegance of this creative interpretation of the timeless shape.
