About This Pipe

Davide Iafisco may be an Italian carver, but his pipes often lean heavily into the Danish style of pipe making, trading the Italian school's tendency to favor massive neoclassical dimensions for forms that contain smooth lines and well-balanced proportions. This bent Apple is an excellent representation of that style, displaying a plump, pert bowl up front, guided by the lifting heel and the sweeping line work featured along its underside. The slightly pinched transition helps accentuate the bowl's rounded nature while also making the flaring shank even more dramatic and impressive. The orientation of the plateau-crowned shank face favors the right side, its slanted disposition acting as a subtle asymmetric accent to echo the direction the material takes along the rim. Said plateau has been stained a darker reddish tone, allowing it to pop out against the stummel's vibrant contrast stain and the lively flame grain it highlights. It's small touches like these that make shape chart standards more interesting and showcase an artisan's meticulous eye for detail as well as how even seemingly minute features can dramatically impact a pipe's presentation.
