About This Pipe
Especially pleasing about this shape from Sam Cui is the transition from shank to bowl, which rides low on the stummel and helps demarcate the bowl as its own entity, rising in a soft Dublin taper from the flattened heel, which is somewhat curved and does not accommodate standing on its own. Sam's plateau treatment is especially showcased here with a rim partially sanded to punctuate the surface with dots of smooth briar. The expanding shank harmonizes with the taper of the bowl for nice echoing, and the saddle stem pushes the visual weight of the piece forward. A medium/small pipe, it is smooth and light in hand, with top-of-the-line stemwork and excellent grain around the circumference of the bowl. With lots of implied forward motion, this Sam Cui is a piece to be treasured by some lucky pipe enthusiast for decades to come.
