Smooth Natural Pickaxe with Bamboo and Mammoth Tobacco Pipe

Brazilian carver Emanuel de Queiroz Emiliano offers a wide selection of pipes, with his broad portfolio almost evenly split between shape-chart standards and more sculptural, Freehand-inspired designs. This Pickaxe represents the more stylized end of Emiliano's shaping spectrum. Up front, a tall, full-bodied bowl stands atop a sharp, well-defined heel and grows thick walls that flare upward to a broad, flat rim. The bowl's dramatically curved fore wall lends the totality of the bowl a trumpeting outline and forward-surging posture that paradoxically draws the eye to the rearward orientation of the heel. An angled transition follows the bowl and sees the start of a high-kicking shank that joins a demurely curved saddle stem at a a junction accented with bamboo. Three knuckles of the dense grass mark the transition, each of which is accented with a node of mammoth. The mammoth complements the bamboo's complexion and draws the eye to each of the knuckles, which are evenly spaced and quite thick, mirroring the base of the mouthpiece. A warm, orange-hued smooth finish completes the ensemble and highlights a breathtaking display of cross grain across the bowl's flanks.
