Not very complex flavor wise. I mainly get a salty leather type taste. Great if you just want a simple all day smoke. On its own, Winchester tastes weirdly… familiar. Like unsweetened iced tea. Not bad iced tea either. Dry, earthy, faintly tannic, and almost dusty in a way that somehow works. It’s got this old-time Americana thing happening. The smell takes me back to the little midwestern farm town I grew up in. Specifically, when my grandpa would take me with him to the family-owned hardware store. It smells like that hardware store.

I respect it more than I actively crave it.

By itself, I can only smoke it when I’m specifically in the mood for that flavor profile. It’s honest tobacco. No fireworks. No syrup. No casino lights. Just leaf standing there in suspenders with its arms crossed going, “Take it or leave it, pal.”

But then I mixed it with my pouch of good ol’ Half & Half.
For me, that unlocked it.

Something about Winchester’s dry tea-like leafy flavor colliding with Half & Half’s “bright and burley” suddenly turns both blends into something really interesting. The rough edges round out, the sweetness lands better, and the whole thing starts tasting like a story with multiple chapters instead of one.

That mixture? Absolute home run.
Genuinely fantastic.

Simple but Good

I changed my review of this blend. I have a number of tobacco blends to choose from, but I find myself reaching for this blend more often. I wrote whether I would order a pound. My thinking now is different having smoked about half of my four ounces. I’ll keep the rest of this review as I wrote it the first time. I said I decided I would not order a pound; but my thoughts about it have changed. I’ll order more to keep some on hand for a change of pace. It is a great compliment to my other tobacco choices. I changed my rating from a four to a four and a half star review. Here is why: As I say it is a simple Virginia and might need a little more blending. But for those who have smoked aros and want to venture into English tobaccos this is almost like an English aro. I compare it to Davidoff English Mixture, but is naturally a bit sweeter. I like a little extra with Virginias. But as a straight Virginia the Black Cavendish blends very well with it. There is a natural sweetness to it....Read More

A modern elegant codger blend!!

Such a great anytime/all day blend! It can be smoked when being contemplative or when doing other tasks. When contemplating, I get alternating flavors of dark fruit, chocolate chip oatmeal cookie, almond, sweet earth, and some slight floral notes. The red Virginia and burley/Cavendish play so seamlessly well together. If I had to compare, I would say this is smoother, sweeter, and lacking the random sour notes of Pegasus (which I still love). I am very surprised that this tobacco isn’t talked about more. I recently purchased 4 ounces of this because of the description on this tobacco. I was smoking sutliff ready rubbed, the edgeworth match. But I bought 8 ounces of SRR and it was totally disgusting. I threw almost all of it away. I don’t know if it was just the bottom of the barrel or not but I’m not one to go back if I get burned on something. Anyway, I tried this Winchester and it is phenomenal. It is now my new all day. It reminds me a little of five brothers. This is not too sweet and not too bitter or bland. It’s just right. The smoothness is amazing. It’s surprising how smooth it is because of the Virginia in it. The room not does remind me of that old timey pipe tobacco. Great room note. The nic hit is spot on too. I dip Copenhagen and smoke a pipe. When I get done smoking this stuff I won’t dip for a long while. This tobacco is best sipped to taste that quality tasty tobacco. If you’re a codger taste kind of guy it’s a good one to have around.
