Cornell & Diehl - Winchester
Simple but Good
I changed my review of this blend. I have a number of tobacco blends to choose from, but I find myself reaching for this blend more often. I wrote whether I would order a pound. My thinking now is different having smoked about half of my four ounces. I’ll keep the rest of this review as I wrote it the first time. I said I decided I would not order a pound; but my thoughts about it have changed. I’ll order more to keep some on hand for a change of pace. It is a great compliment to my other tobacco choices. I changed my rating from a four to a four and a half star review. Here is why: As I say it is a simple Virginia and might need a little more blending. But for those who have smoked aros and want to venture into English tobaccos this is almost like an English aro. I compare it to Davidoff English Mixture, but is naturally a bit sweeter. I like a little extra with Virginias. But as a straight Virginia the Black Cavendish blends very well with it. There is a natural sweetness to it.

Cornell & Diehl - Old College
It’s the Burley
I’m not sure, but the Burley sets this apart from other mixtures without it. I’ve done some comparisons and found I like the Burley mixed in. I’m not a big fan of Burley but in Old College it works. Some might find it just average, but I find it rather enjoyable. It has enough complexity for an English tobacco. Bought eight ounces on a whim, but after smoking about half in a number of pipes I’ve grown to like it. Maybe I like Burley more than I thought I did. It might not be Summa Cum Laude but is still near the top of the class. I might like it more as I smoke more of it. This mixture is just about right for me.

Peter Stokkebye - PS303 Peaches & Creme
Not a Big Fan
I’m not an English snob as my beginning roots of pipe smoking are in Aromatics. I wanted something for spring and did a search on tobaccos for spring and this one was first one on one of the lists. To me an aromatic is just that. This one isn’t bad, but in some ways it’s just an average aromatic. If the sound of the flavor appeals to you then go for it. I ordered eight ounces and will smoke it all. As to whether I will buy it again, I’m not sure. There are too many aromatics to buy than just one. It might be above average because it’s Peter Stokkebye’s blend. For me it’s an average aromatic—something I can smoke that is just different from an English. I’ll never give up aromatics, though. Sometimes I want something that is different from an English.

Cornell & Diehl - Good Morning 2oz
Good Morning
If you enjoy Peterson’s Early Morning Pipe you will like Good Morning. I bought a tin just to try and I can say I’m glad I did. It’s not complex but is quite light as an English. The Virginias are sweet and cool. It’s just not very complex. Goes great with a morning cup of coffee, but I would not say it is an all day smoke. For this reason I give it four stars. It would be nice to have around for the first pipe of the day

Peter Stokkebye - PS52 Proper English
Just About Perfect
I was searching for a good English I could smoke all the time. I’m too old for collecting tobacco. I’m limited on storage space. I just want to order one pound of one to take me through a month and believe I have found that one. I like to buy my tobacco in bulk. I took a risk on buying a half pound of this blend. Then I next bought a pound. As I say in my heading, this blend is just about perfect for a bulk tobacco. It is what a good English should be. The Orientals are the right blend without too much Latakia. This blend very well could be my go-to English tobacco. I’ve had a few I’ve liked better, but the bulk price for this fits my monthly tobacco budget. It is everything a proper English should be.

Cornell & Diehl - Exclusive
A Little Much
I like Exclusive well enough, but the nici is a little too much for me. It’s a good English and I can see why the ratings are so good. But for me it’s the Perique. I like it in small doses but for me it’s just too much. For those who love Perique this is perfect. But there are others I like better. Just my honest opinion.

G. L. Pease - Quiet Nights 8oz
Almost Perfect
I usually buy tobacco in bulk, but once in a while I’ll treat myself to a tin. This is one occasion I bought a tin because it was on sale. The rating on this tobacco is spot on and might be in the top ten except maybe for price. This is almost excellent! Others have mentioned the Latakia and Perique with the Orientals. All ingredients for a great English tobacco. It is a wonderful treat to myself. There just isn’t much to be said except to sip it as one would a fine drink. It is to be enjoyed and not rushed.

Cornell & Diehl - Black Gold Maple
Not too Bad
I might be more of an English snob thinking an Aromatic is just an Aromatic. But once in a while I enjoy a change of pace. I’m not sure this blend deserves a lower rating, but I’ll smoke an aromatic once in a while because my wife enjoys the room note. This is not Autumn Evening as some might expect. But actually I enjoy an Aro lighter on flavoring. I think it’s better than three stars. It’s a good Aro. It has a Carmel vanilla flavor that I enjoy without it being overbearing. Just the right touch in my thinking. It might ghost a pipe a little but I never concern myself with ghosting as I smoke both in the same pipes. It has enough flavor with a pleasant room note. Need I say more?

Cornell & Diehl - Bayou Morning
Not Quite a Five
If Smoking Pipes had a rating of 4.8 I would give it that. The Perique might be a tad too spicy. But I can understand such a high rating. I bought eight ounces on a whim. This stuff is that good! Sorry but I like Bayou Night just a tad better. Just a bit less spiciness. But I’m glad I ordered eight ounces instead of less. One can’t go wrong with either! Would I order more? Absolutely! I need both! This is very good, almost perfect! Thank you C&D! And thanks to Smoking Pipes!

Cornell & Diehl - Bayou Night
Not Quite But Close
Old Professor was my favorite go-to, but while this is not quite it, this is close. Maybe a bit spicier than I like, but it is my new go-to. It’s the Orientals that make this what it is. Unless I find something else as I am a sampler. But I wanted a go-to and this is it for right now. Just about a perfect blend. I can smoke this all day long and enjoy it. Just about perfect. That is all I need to say.

Davidoff - English Mixture 50g
A Nice Introduction
I didn’t buy my tin from Smoking Pipes as they were out of stock when I last placed an order. I went to my local shop and bought a tin from them. I have to live with a tobacco; but after reading reviews and smoked a few bowls, all I need to say is what I said in my title. If you want to start with a good English this blend is a great place to begin. Nothing very complex about it. Just a good English. Aromatics are simply that. But a lot goes into a good English. It’s mild enough and well behaved. I won’t buy another tin. I can say I’ve tried it. Just a good tobacco to begin on your journey in English tobaccos. There is so much to choose from. Is what I expected. No surprises and doesn’t require too much thought about it. Just a good place to start.
