Cornell & Diehl - Pegasus
Excellent burley blend
This is an excellent burley blend. I was expecting something like haunted bookshop or a mellower old Joe Krantz. Pegasus is a different critter all together. Creamy burley with good nicotine content. It’s an all day smoke. I would say this is c&d version of a codger blend. Not too complex but with enough flavor to keep you interested. And devoid of all the propyleneglycol/humectorant/cheap flavorings in other blends.
Granger - Granger 7oz
Best codger blend ever!
I can’t believe I’ve waited this long to try this blend. I’m aware that Scandinavian tobacco group has made some subtle changes from the original product but I believe they are probably good changes. The tin note on this is nearly all tobacco with a very faint sweetness, maybe cocoa and anise. Flavor wise this is a well-behaved nutty Burley with a subtle brown sugar sweetness undertone. It took a light very well and stays lit. Nicotine somewhere between mild and medium. There’s enough there to notice and I have a pretty high tolerance, but not a nicotine bomb like dark fired or old Joe Krantz. I’ve tried other OTC blends and found most of them wanting in vitamin N, Granger is the exception to the rule. It’s a very satisfying blend that I believe will probably be a daily smoke for me. Room note is not sweet, but not offensive either. The thing I’m most impressed with is this is one of the only tobaccos that taste the same at the bottom of the bowl as it does at the first light. While the flavor is not complex, sometimes the simple things are the best things. I fell in love with this on the first smoke and it just keeps getting better.
Cornell & Diehl - Bayou Night
If you were looking for a different smoke, this is it.
The Perique overpowers all other flavors, but in a good way. Strong flavor and medium strong, nicotine level. I can barely detect any Latakia at all. Good smoke, but I can’t help but wonder what this would be like if they replaced the Latakia with dark fired Kentucky.
Cornell & Diehl - Poplar Camp
Nearly perfect.
This is becoming a daily smoke for me. Finally a va/per that doesn’t kill my tongue. The perique flavor starts out as fermented fruit and turns peppery towards the bottom of the bowl. The Virginia gives sweetbread vibes. And the black Cavendish ties it all together in a mellow smoke. Great nicotine hit. Overall, I would describe this as Bayou mornings smoother Cousin.
Cornell & Diehl - Yorktown
Easy smoking Virginia
It gives the subtle sweetness that I’ve come to expect from Virginia tobaccos. I taste mostly a sweet bread type flavor with subtle notes of dried fruit. The tobacco comes very dry in the bag and is a quick smoke. I would rate the vitamin N level as medium. Good, but nothing to write home about.
Cornell & Diehl - Winchester
Simple goodness
Not very complex flavor wise. I mainly get a salty leather type taste. Great if you just want a simple all day smoke. What I like about it is it’s reminiscent of the old codger blends as far as flavor goes, but actually has noticeable nicotine, which is something many of the codger blends lack.
Cornell & Diehl - Mississippi Mud 2oz
English with a hint of sweetness
This is very good, but it’s hard to describe. English with a hint of sweetness is the best I can do. The Latakia and perique are there, but not overpowering. The black Cavendish kind of brings everything together and provides a subtle sweetness. Overall, it’s a very earthy flavor. So Mississippi mud is an apt name. I would recommend a little bit of drying time. Straight out of the tin it required a few re-lights. I would definitely buy this again.
Cornell & Diehl - Autumn Evening
Good for a change of pace.
I will preface this by saying that I’m not a big aromatic fan. That being said, this is a good blend. Not in my regular rotation, but every once in a while as a change of pace. The tin note and the room note are both very pleasant. The flavor is moderately sweet and had me a bit confused at first. I don’t get as much of the maple as I thought I would puffing or sipping it. The maple really hits for me on the retro-hale. Kind of reminds me of pancakes with aunt Jemima syrup.
Cornell & Diehl - Star of the East
Simply elegant
This one has quickly become my go to English blend. Very generous in the nicotine department. The latakia reminds me of a nice woody campfire, and the oriental leaf does nice job of tying the Virginia and Latakia together. This one reminds me very much of the old Dunhill/peterson night cap. A class act from c&d
Cornell & Diehl - Bayou Morning Flake 8oz
Perique lovers dream
If you like va/pers this is a must try blend. The tin note is very sour. The perique is definitely the star of the show. Very spicy, but under the spice there’s a nice raisin bread note from the Virginia. If va/pers didn’t give me tongue bite this would be a daily smoke for me. That being said, I have only tried the flake version of this blend. From what I hear the regular bayou morning ribbon cut is a very different experience. This is a class act for anyone’s rotation though. Generous in the vitamin N department.
Cornell & Diehl - Old Joe Krantz
Always good
If you like burley forward blends, this is a must try. Nutty and toasty with just enough Virginia for a faint hint of sweetness. The perique is subtle in this one and comes off with an occasional pepper taste. It’s an almost daily smoke for me. It is a nicotine bomb though. I have a high tolerance and I will get the sweats from this one if I rush the cadence. If you are a heavy cigarette smoker looking to make the transition to pipes, this would be a good blend to try.
Rattray's - Wallace Flake 50g
Good
Good. Very similar to Peter’s university flake. The Virginia really comes through on this. There’s a subtle sweetness that reminds me of molasses or brown sugar. Can bite your tongue a little if pushed hard.
Lane Limited - BCA
Good by itself, great for blending.
I’m not the greatest fan of aromatics at this phase of my pipe smoking. I have to admit I have a fondness for this blend that goes back a long way. My fondness is due in part to the mellow smoke experience and part nostalgia. I’ve smoked a pipe off and on since I was 17 years old. I started out smoking Prince Albert for the first couple of weeks. My older brother found out that I was smoking a pipe and bought me a pound of lane BCA and gave it to me in a glass tobacco jar for Christmas. I fell in love with the blend immediately and try to always keep some around. It’s good by itself, although I’ve never been able to really tell exactly what I’m tasting. Sometimes I get notes of vanilla and sometimes amaretto, sometimes something boozy like a Brandy. The trick with this tobacco is to give it a good charring light and then let it go out for a few minutes until the tobacco stiffens up and dries a little bit. And then re-light and puff slowly. My daily smoke is the original old Joe Krantz. Once in a while I will mix about 10 to 15% BCA into some old Joe Krants if I’m getting flavor fatigue. It adds a little bit of sweetness to old Joe that is very pleasant.
Sir Walter Raleigh - Aromatic 7oz
An aromatic for people that usually don’t like aromatics.
I’m not sure why I haven’t tried this sooner. At some point or other, I’ve tried most all of the other OTC brands. The tin note is attention grabbing, yet hard to define. Smoking it I can taste nice Burley with an occasional grassy Virginia note, as well as a chocolatey boozy taste that is not at all unpleasant. Lights and smokes well. My normal smoke is old Joe Krantz, and I like to dabble with English blends as well. I’m not at all a fan usually of aromatics. Sir Walter Raleigh aromatic is different. The topping/casing is very mild and plays second fiddle to the tobacco. I can easily see this being in my regular rotation, if not a daily go to smoke.
