Cornell & Diehl - Engine #99
Should be acceptable to most...
I grabbed up one pound of this more than a year ago, elsewhere (P&C), and have been trying this (daily) over the past week or so. The blend definitely sits in the English realm, at first. But even though it is mentioned to have "enough Latakia to pull ol' #99 up a mountain grade,' it pushes the boundary of a Balkan; with the oriental seemingly forward most of the time; at least this is what I detect. Moving on...if I draw in wisps (which I recommend), rather than drawing aggressively/deeply, the traditional English/Balkan flavors are there and are quite enjoyable. Aggressive drawing can become a bit bitey, especially in the 'retro-hale' with some sting. This blend is a producer of clouds though so, yes, expect clouds. Anyhow, I'm torn between rating this good (4.0★) or excellent (5.0★) at the moment. So I'm sticking right in the middle for now. Although I'm keeping the bookmark, for this, in my *Best* Folder; for future purchases.

Cornell & Diehl - Pirate Kake 2oz
Loads of flavor here...
Yes, loads of flavor. I have four ounces of this, not yet smoked, from 2024 and I just recently received another 16 ounces (dated; Mar. '26). It's not like me to add more of a blend prior to trying some of what I already have. And I don't know why I did this time. Anyhow, of this "just received" 16 ounces, I kept a small slice of "Kake" out to try and I'm glad I did. This has a bunch of pleasant and enjoyable flavor. Probably has more flavor than any of the "near 100" other blends I've ever tried. And even though it is 75% Latakia (which is generally low in nicotine) the nicotine is low; mild-to-moderate I'd say. Perfect for a first bowl of the day, with my morning cup of black coffee. Or the last bowl of the day, in the evening; when I usually have a bowl of Dark-Flake; G.H.&Co.-Dark Flake, Rattray's-Stirling Flake, Peterson-Irish Flake...and the like. I want to give it 4.7★ to 4.8★...but I give it 5.0★ today. Because, "one," I can't find any fault with it. And, "two," if I were to *Update* my rating in the future, I expect it could only go up from here.

Peter Stokkebye - PS402 Luxury Twist Flake
Not yet ready for me...but I can tell it is going to be good.
I got some ounces on a suggestion and had a few bowls upon its arrival. Not sure when produced for P.S. blends having no "date stickers." It's pleasantly flavorful, yes...tasty, but has a bit of harshness to contend with and it's just a bit too "green" for me right now. So I've put the jar away for it to get some age on it and I will *Update* this review when deserved; as always. My guess, today is it can only receive a higher rating than given today.

Cobblestone - Outdoors Camping 1.75oz
Glad I only found two tins in storage...
Just opened one of two tins today (because of the low 2.8 rating I see). Mine are dated Mar. 2023. It is very dry, so I packed it tightly in a bowl and punched a hole with the poker. It stayed lit, its flavor had hints of potential, but I just couldn't rate it as "average" today; it is definitely "Below Average." Along with the tobacco, I have put two RAW Hydrostones and two Boveda packets in the jar. I'll give it some time and report back. Dang...I also have two tins of Cobblestone "Hiking" (rated 4.7) and I should check those soon. Not a good way to go out, Sutliff...NOT GOOD! I did plan to keep all of my remaining Sutliff and Mac Baren blends; thanks to another STG acquisition. And STG ... ;[

Cornell & Diehl - Exclusive
Very nice....could be a regular. (*Updated*)
(*Updated*) Bumping it now, already, from 4.5★ to 5.0★. This blend has quickly earned a spot in my Top Five and I want it often. If this were the only pipe tobacco available...I wouldn't be at all sad. I plan to order more of this...soon. Also, it doesn't taste the same in all pipes. For this reason, I recommend trying Exclusive in a number of your pipes; if you have them. (*Original Rating/Review*) What I have recently received is very nice and could end up being a regular; but it is freshly made. I have one unopened 2 oz tin, I received in early '24 (likely produced in the second half of '23) and this recently ordered 16 oz (dated Mar. 25, 2026); which I am currently trying out. This rating is based on the 16 oz dated: Mar. '26. Tobacco Reviews (TR) has an average rating for this at 2.97/4; equivalent to 3.75/5. The TR comments all seem to do a lot of comparisons of this to other blends. They can't seem to help themselves. And there's an overuse of "I taste blah blah blah?" in their comments. But I don't eat "figs, plums, manure, grass, hay, stewed fruit, raisin bread, mushroom," and more; not on the regular anyway. So I am not going to say it tastes like any of those. And what does "musty, woodsy, dark, or muddy" even taste like? So anyhow, I give it an initial rating of 4.5★ for being very nice; between good and excellent. It tempts me to open the one 2 oz tin, I have, that is over two years aged. But I'll refrain for now. I love the flavor of this blend, the excitement I get when tasting every puff, and that it isn't overpowering in any way. I would not have expected it to be a VaPer w/Cav though. So I can see why so many might be comparing it to other VaPer's. But I don't buy tobacco to taste like others. If I enjoy another...I'll just buy the other. What I want is to try unfamiliar-to-me blends. To see what each has to offer, on its own; separate and uniquely from all others. Exclusive fits that to a 'T'. Will probably be upgrading my rating to 5.0★ real soon...it's just so good!

Cornell & Diehl - Tuggle Hall
It's good...but...
*Updating Again (Aug. 2026)* - In stocking up, I ordered three more pound. SP told me over the phone what they had left on the shelf was all dated Aug. 2024; same date as my original order of Tuggle Hall. However, one of the three pounds was dated Jul. 2026 and I mistakenly filled a pipe from the 7/26 blend. Thinking it was a jar of Exclusive; which I also received three pounds of. Upon lighting it I could tell it was not Exclusive. And it was then that I realized I had instead filled the pipe with 7/26 Tuggle Hall. I am updating, AGAIN, only to say "do yourself a favor and do not smoke, nor rate, Tuggle Hall without aging it some. Tuggle Hall from 2024 = Great! Tuggle Hall from 2026 = Below Average. (*Updated* June 2026) - Bumping this from 4.0★ to 5.0★ today, and I've moved its link/bookmark from my 'good' folder to the 'best' folder for being one of the most congenial blends I've had to date. This is good in nearly all of my pipes (best when in one of my Savi. 230's) and has become one I want and reach for often. I just keep wanting to smoke it throughout the day. (*Original Review*) Upon its arrival (16 oz bag) I am noticing its production date is Aug. '24 on the little "date-sticker" and is slightly dry. After a few bowls, though, I can say I do like how it tastes in most of my pipes; probably because I do enjoy Burley in blends. The Burley is forefront, it is mildly sweet...and it's more sweet than peppery. So the "%" of perique, in this, is likely a single digit. There are other flavors that peak at times...making it interesting and keeping my attention. So yeah, as stated in the title; "it's good but" it is sadly a touch dry...yet fixable. I will *Update* if/when necessary.

Rattray's - Stirling Flake 50g
This is a really great smoke...'twas love at first light!
Yes, it is a very enjoyable smoking blend. It's one long flake, moisture seems perfect, and from the first light I could tell I am going to love this VaBur. Got flavor? Yes...and loads of it. My four tins were received in early Feb. of '24...so they were probably produced in the second-half of 2023. I don't know if this could be made more perfect than it already seems to be. If you enjoy flavor throughout the bowl, and a blend on the comforting side of stout, then you must consider trying Stirling Flake. Heck, even if you stray away from stout blends...this one might ease you into becoming comfortable with at least this one.

Cornell & Diehl - Haunted Bookshop 2oz
It's good, but what the ... ?
To start, I have two 2 oz tins, 4 oz bulk, and 16 oz bulk ... and I've not yet even smoked it before recently opening the two 2 oz tins; dated Oct. 30, 2023. The first one I opened had a bit of hairy white mold growing on top. SP remedied that and I tossed it out. Then I opened the second tin; which appeared to be fine. I have this bookmarked and added its 5-Star rating. But I see its rating has recently taken a bit of a dip. What I have noticed, so far, is that while being pleasant to smoke, its taste rarely, no never, lingers long enough to get a grasp on what I am tasting. I found that for me to taste it, I must draw and exhale (or retro-hale) very slowly to be able to taste something. Which is fine, but even then I find it difficult to register what I just tasted. I think others have mentioned it tastes like something is missing, or is similar to a transparent ghost. Now I understand what they are trying to say. Still, it is a "better-than-good" blend (4 to 4.5 Star). It certainly has the potential of being a great blend though; if one of the components stood strong above the rest. Anyhow, as I always do, I will revise/update as necessary.

G. L. Pease - Fillmore 2oz
This is a great blend/VaPer...wow!
Wow! Haven't had much of this, yet, but it sure is tasty. You'll find it difficult to stop puffing on it. But puff/sip slowly, if you really want to taste it and to get the most from it. Mine is dated May 6, '25...so it's eleven months aged. It begins on the very mellow side, a tiny bit sweet, but does become a bit spicy past the halfway mark. I imagine the spiciness will mellow with more time. Had I looked at the ratings, I would've likely not opened this yet. As I typically open lower rated blends of those I have but I've not yet tried; before cracking open the "good (according to ratings) stuff." So I will likely put this back into storage and open Montgomery...or Navigator. Those two being the lowest rated of the nine G.L. Pease blends I have and have never tried. But know this blend is right up there near the top; for blends you must, or should, have on hand. Because you will likely want a bowl or more of this on the daily.

Cornell & Diehl - Kelly's Coin 2oz
First bowl rating...3.5★, for now, but is nearly a 4.0★.
(*Updated*) This one is really growing on me and has now surpassed the 4.0★ mark I thought this would end up for me; and it's gone from 3.5★ to 4.5★. I intend to stock up (ordered and received 4 more tins), to always have some around, and enjoy its presence much more often. I just wish it were available in "Bulk." It's Burley is tasty and enjoyable. Not in every pipe, perhaps, and not smoking it at a pace you decide; try slowing down and maybe re-light it often. Again, when not sipping it slowly, and consciously, you can or should expect the appearance of 'niccups.' (*Original Review*) "First handful of bowls" rating...of 3.5★, for now, but is nearly a 4.0★. More time spent on learning to smoke this blend will tell the tale. My 2oz tin is dated Dec. 2023. The Burley comes through the most with this blend, when smoking this right, and it isn't bad at all. So this is deserving of a slightly better than "just average" rating. Virginia...not sure where it is but it must be complementing the blend quite well. And the Cavendish...is a ghost (has maybe 1% to 2%; if that, if I were to guess). But I am OK with the Burley always being present. My initial thoughts are; "nice mild and tasty Burley with no bite and no niccups...when approached slowly." Moisture was "ready-to-go" directly from the tin. I opened this tin for it being one of the lowest rated blends I have in storage. But I've transferred it into a jar. And after having a few more bowls, of it, I will likely store what remains away with other "better blends" of mine. I'll determine, later if it is one I will collect more of to store. Mind you, I smoked my first bowl in one of my M.M. cob pipes, on a cold morning outdoors, but it is nearly as enjoyable from the handful of other pipes. If you enjoy burley blends it is worth grabbing up a tin...and then spend some time getting to learn how best to smoke it.

Cornell & Diehl - Orient Express 2oz
Still working on this one...
Just started working on a tin dated twenty five months ago; and I give it a "a bit below average" rating. It isn't one I would reorder more of, but it's tolerable for now. Mild? Yes! There are faint hints of floral/herbs...definitely in the forefront and is a tiny bit sour. I suggest smoking this when comfortable and quiet...and attempt to learn how it smokes best. And, please, share what you learn if you succeed in making this one a winner. Because I have yet to find the way to enjoy this.

Cornell & Diehl - Bijou 2oz
Tried at just 2 yrs .. and wow!
Tried some of this today, at just over 2 yrs (dated Dec. 2023) and in a Cob pipe, and wow! Really looking forward to this one maturing in the jar I transferred it to. In another however many years from now ... I can see myself saying "when I smoke my pipe, I only smoke Bijou." But again, this first bowl is from a Cob. Then I smoked another bowl in a briar and ... "nope!" So I took note of this and I will definitely stock up with more of this, get it into jars, and wait and try again; though only in a Cob pipe before spending more time with it. If I'd only smoked this in the Cob, I would rate it 5.0★. The rating for this in the briar, currently (w/2 yrs of age) would be no higher than 2.5★. I do wish it were available in larger amounts. It is stout, with distinctive and yummy tobacco flavors, but not offensively so. A slight bit, or rather a hint of sweetness is always present and welcomed. But yeah, going to be letting the rest age some more. If you haven't any of this...get you some and try after a couple of years. I know many will want knowing you have more of this in storage.

Rattray's - No. 7 Reserve 100g
Torn between giving this 3.0 or 3.5....(*Updated*)
I'm torn between giving this 3.0★ and 3.5★ ... so, after trying a number of times, 3.0★ it is. Only because it isn't quite yet "Good" for me, and is barely average. I do enjoy the first half of each bowl and the intensity of those flavors it delivers upon light-up. But then it quickly loses some of its earlier flavors it provided me. I spend the second half, of each bowl, trying to get back what was once there but is now lost. Then there's always some bite sneaking up from the shadows. Perhaps, in time, I will come to enjoy this. Only time will tell. I will *Update* when or if deserved. Now *Updated* (tin is dated Mar. '24); as this has for others, I see in other reviews, this just keeps getting yummier and yummier. Probably for learning how to smoke it. For this reason, and for adding its link to my "next-to-order* list, I bumped up my rating to 4.0★ today. And I can now say, to suggest, "it is worthy of giving it a try." Spending some time to learn the best way to smoke it will provide a rewarding smoke. Enjoy.

Rattray's - Marlin Flake 100g
For me, this is below average (*Updated*)
I have fourteen different Rattray's blends and today I decided to try one. So, I looked at all of them, and their ratings, and opened up Marlin Flake; for it being the lowest rated of those fourteen I have. For a VaPer w/cav, similar to P.S. Bulls Eye Flake, I expected something I would enjoy; despite its current 3.3★ rating. And also, for the two year old Jan. '24 date on my 100g tin. OK...so here's my first bowl review; I immediately detect tart citrus and subtle sweetness. Only the tartness becomes a bit annoying with the overwhelming feeling of dry-mouth; to the point of some puckering occurring. Then there's its noticeable "bite" and "sting"...forcing "sipping only" when smoking this. And still its bite is unbearable. Some of the enjoyment of piping is in the figuring out how to best enjoy each blend. But, and then, you get to enjoy it afterward. This one requires the work but then is not enjoyable, nor rewarding. I'll try this in a Churchwarden and update, this review, if deserved. But for right now, it falls a bit below "average" for me. Next up, from Rattray's, will be the 3.8★ (second lowest rated of the fourteen I have): "No. 7 Reserve." (*Update*)...yeah, no improvement with this in Churchwardens. Also, it was not good in long Cob-pipes nor "clays." So I dropped it from 2.5★ to 2.0★ and I'll continue to revisit this from time-to-time.

Sutliff - RL-BD
No point reviewing, I know, but...
This is, obviously, one of the numerous clones/replicas of a one hundred (plus) year old blend. I still have three pounds of Match Barking Dog and RL-BD too. It is very mild, slightly sweet, and unoffensive. All of my Sutliff, and even Mac Baren, blends are locked away; not getting smoked often, for them being discontinued. The last of it, I ordered, was labeled RL-BD instead of Match Barking Dog. This RL-BD seems more mild, less tasty, and more moist & sticky than the Match Barking Dog I've previously received. I do enjoy having some from time to time, because it just has the ability to take me back in time; it's just a good comforting smoke. But I rate it at 3.5★ (average/good) for the last of it I received. Previous to this later RL-BD, I would easily give it 4.0★ (maybe a bit higher) for being good...yeah, just good.

Kramer's - Father Dempsey
Not sure how it gets any better than this!
What else is there to say? Just tried a bowl of my 2-tins & 8oz bulk I ordered, two years ago, and magic. This is truly an enjoyable English'ious blend. I find it interesting too. A puff or few, I tasted something I could only describe as a hint of melon, and then a hint of sweet & mild mint maybe??? Just not sure. Throughout the bowl it seemingly plays with the taste buds. Giving you something different each draw. In such a way, it says; "try this...and now this...how about this?" I'll be needing to get more of this ordered soon. And all of this from a M.M. Cob with the shank cut short to remove the excess from inside the bowl, homemade pipe mortar forming the bottom inside the bowl, and charcoal and sour cream coating of the inside of the bowl as well. I like where the 4.8★ rating is for this today. As I too would rate it between 4.5★ and 5★, after just this one bowl, but yeah...closer to 5★. I tried a second bowl in a billiard briar and it wasn't as tasty as the first bowl in the cob; was good, just not the same. I will *Update* today's rating if/when necessary. C&D/Laudisi took over production of this blend on about the year 2016 (says Prof. Google). Given how popular and successful it seems to be, they'll likely not ever discontinue its production. And this is a good thing.

Cornell & Diehl - Byzantium
Pretty good, to enjoyable, stuff...
I just took two blends out of storage after giving them nearly two years in there. The tin notes of the two, Byzantium and Bailey's Front Porch, is very similar to me. Strange though, for there being no VA or Burley in this and no Orientals in the Bailey's F.P.. So I tried Bailey's Front Porch just before a bowl of this. Anyhow, this Byzantium is much more tasty then Bailey's F.P., and is one I would likely order more of. The other, Bailey's FP...not likely to reorder.

(*Update*) This one is continually growing on me. Beginning to love the taste/flavors, mildness, comfort, and enjoyment, and I always find myself reaching for it. So....I've bumped my rating up to 4.5★. And for wanting more, in storage, I put its link onto my "next order" list. (*Original Review*) Hmm...wasn't all that impressed with this. I just opened a jar after it sat for two years. It was kept in a section of storage for blends I didn't care for upon arrival; giving them some time before revisiting. And I am still not overly excited for it. It's between Average and Good for me. So I give it 3.5★ for now, as I'll need more time with it. I mean it is 26°F outside right now...and it is morning. Not quite the "sitting on the porch on those late summer evenings" time as suggested in its description. I smoked this back-to-back with Byzantium, because the two had very similar tin/jar notes. And, at the moment, I prefer Byzantium over this.

Cornell & Diehl - Yorktown
Just average to average/good.
I wanted to rate this 3.0 to 3.2, but gave it 3.5 to be near its current average. So my experience, alone, doesn't taint the rating. I had this one waiting in my section of 'Bulk-T' I didn't care much for when it arrived; which was near two years ago. I just tried one bowl of it and was still unimpressed. Previous to this bowl, this morning, I had a bowl of Crowley's Best. And (two year old) Crowley's was far better tasting and enjoyable. This was just not for me. I tried smoking it gently, as I did with Crowley's, and slowly sipped each draw. It has got a bold 'T' flavor, no sweetness was detected, and if drawn too long and strong...a bit of bite; being even worse on the retro-hale. So, I can only suggest giving this some time and then "Foghat" it...you know; "Slow Ride....Take It Easy!"

F&K - Lancer Ready Rubbed
A bit underwhelming...for me. (*Updated*)
I am trying this at one month short of two years when I received this 4 ounces back in Feb. '24. I obviously didn't care for this much back then. Because when I receive a new blend I try it. If I don't enjoy it, I'll store it and try again later and give my review then. So here we go; the Latakia is weak, to absent, and the VA only sometimes provides a hint of sweetness. Most puffs I was tasting nothing, really, with the occasional VA sweetness. Near the end of the bowl is when I was faintly detecting some Lat-smokiness. So for me, this is but average. But now, for not enjoying it and after only a few bowls, it is back in storage. And it will take me some time to smoke this 4oz. It just isn't one I would consider keeping on hand. So yes, for me and my enjoyment, it's just average. (*Update*) OK, I am trying this again and......well, I am starting to enjoy it. I do dry it quite a bit before smoking. Each bowl starts me out in the barn for tasting the smell of cut dry grass/hay...maybe even fermenting a bit. Then, midway, it's out to the citrus orchard. Finally, it is back to the house. Where some smokey/sweet BBQ awaits. This isn't the routine in just any pipe...but with the right one, this is it.

Cornell & Diehl - Red Odessa
Better than when I first got this.
Yes, much better than when I first got this blend. I recall, nearly two years ago, trying this upon its arrival. I tried it and quickly put it away thinking "nope!" But now, it is quite tasty, and yummy, and I must grab some more. Today I'm torn between rating it 4.0★ and 4.5★. But since I will be ordering more, I'll go with rating it 4.5★.

Sillem's - Black 100g
Very dry, but still it tastes good.
I grabbed two tins of these back in Feb. '24. Little did I know, then, the bag inside wasn't sealed. So I am not sure if it was dry, even back then. I just read reviews for this today (Jan. '26) and decided to check mine. And yes, it was "CRISPY" dry. So I transferred both tins into a 32 oz Mason jar. I added two Boveda packets to the jar; to allow it to sit for a week or so. I also "snuck" out a bowl's worth to smoke right now. And if you've ever smoked any "Tabac de la Semois" offerings, you'd know with extra-crispy-dry tobacco to pack the bowl "TIGHTLY/FIRMLY." I did so and lit it up. This is one of the better tasting 'Aromatic' blends I have yet tasted (started piping in Jan. '24). Granted, and you should know, I do "NOT" enjoy Aromatics. I give away, or throw out, nearly all Aro's I have tried over the past two years (nearly twenty of them). But I did enjoy my first bowl of this. I'll let the rest sit in its jar with the two Boveda packs and try again after a week or so. And if this doesn't help...I am happy to leave it dry and crispy. Because that is something I can live with and enjoy. Cheers.

Gawith Hoggarth & Co. - Dark Plug
A nice break from "Dark Flake Unscented."
I initially thought this was just the "uncut" version of Dark Flake Unscented (DFU). But after having some of this, it is noticeably more mild than DFU by a step or two. And yet there's not much difference in taste. Perhaps they "are" the same, but I do not believe they are. With this, as I do with DFU, I gently puff/sip to avoid the niccups and to enjoy its flavors more. So if you've ever tried DFU and enjoyeded it, but thought "this is too strong." Then give this a shot; slice it thinly with a sturdy and 'long' utility razor, or very sharp knife, and load it however you please. Enjoy.

Lane Limited - RLP-6

I just took out three bulk aromatics, I collected back in Feb. '24, that I've been meaning to try. There is 8 oz/each in 32 oz jars and sealed with vacuum. The three are: PS24 Nougat__Lane limited 1-Q__Lane Limited RLP-6. Also, you should know, I have yet to find any aromatics I enjoy. I typically throw out or give away all aromatics I've ordered in the past (about sixteen of them). Moving on, of these three, I am enjoying PS24 Nougat the most...1-Q and RLP-6 are rated right behind. But this order changes from pipe to pipe. None of the three are something I would smoke all of the time. But one could easily choose to do so. I've found all three tastes better when puffed/"sipped" very gently, and I must resist the urge to tamp; for tamping changes them quite a bit. So I load the bowl and pack it between loose and mid-firm (no drying) and light it. Then I just draw ever so lightly.. As though I am only intending to keep it barely lit; or on the verge of going out. This is when I find I can actually taste these. Perhaps this is something I should've been doing all along with all aromatics; and I just hadn't yet learned???

None of the three are something I would smoke all of the time. But one could easily choose to do so. I've found all three tastes better when puffed/"sipped" very gently, and I must resist the urge to tamp; for tamping changes them quite a bit. So I load the bowl and pack it between loose and mid-firm (no drying) and light it. Then I just draw ever so lightly.. As though I am only intending to keep it barely lit; or on the verge of going out. This is when I find I can actually taste these. Perhaps this is something I should've been doing all along with all aromatics; and I just hadn't yet learned???

Dan Tobacco - Salty Dogs 50g
Not the most enjoyable...
Not the most enjoyable...especially for its price point of $258.00/lb...or (with an average of 19 bowls per 50g) $1.50/bowl. Granted this is a rating given after but a handful of bowls. But I cannot yet rate it, even, 'good' for a few reasons. One; not found to be enjoyable...it's very mild and hardly has any taste/flavor. It's hit-or-miss, so to speak, and seems to be a tiny bit better in larger/wider bowls. Two; dry-time affects its taste quite a bit. It's most rewarding, so far, when dried very little, if any, and falls flat when dried too long. Three; it seemingly performs better, also, when not snuggly packed (leaving it loose for additional airflow) Four; its price. And for costing more than double of most of my favorites, I expected more from 'Salty Dogs'. I will say my first bowl was quite tasty and I intend to duplicate all I can recall from the first. So to have another rewarding bowl in the same manner. But, as you might do, I went and tried modifying the steps one takes to see if it can be even more rewarding. Only this has not happened, and it's been all downhill since the first. So if new to this blend...try your preferred slice and load method. Do not allow it to dry much; if any. And finally...take note of when and how it delivers! All so you can repeat when you discover its "sweet-spot." I'll *Update* this review as necessary.

Gawith Hoggarth & Co. - Dark Flake Aromatic
Good, but one year has changed it.
I received this nearly one year ago. I tried it and the floral/rose 'perfume' was too much...for me. So I passed on reviewing it then and put it into a jar with vacuum applied. Today I tried it again and the floral/rose is nearly gone??? A year ago I thought if this were to occur, after some time, it would be more like "Dark Flake Unscented." But I was wrong in assuming this. For it's now a bit on the weaker/more-mellow side of both the strength and flavor of 'DF-unscented'. I still enjoy this, the 'Aromatic', but I am not sure I would order more. So I suggest...if you enjoy the floral 'notes'...purchase but a little of this at a time and smoke it immediately. But if those aromas are too much, you can let it sit and try again to see if you prefer what it morphs into. Also...this is even good mixed with "G.H. & Co. Exmoor Mixture."

Gawith Hoggarth & Co. - Coniston Cut Plug
Another yummy G.H. & Co. offering.
This is my initial, only a few bowls at the moment, review. I've only recently been able to pick up this (Coniston), Dark Flake Unscented, and Bosun Cut Plug. This one has what I imagine to be the "lakeland effect"...in that it is quite floral for the first few puffs, or 1/4 bowl. But that then becomes a bit muted and it settles in to the flavor to enjoy throughout the rest of the bowl. I am curious to now see what some age might do for it. I'll pull this out, from time to time, and see. As always...I intend to *Update* my reviews each time I revisit a blend.

Gawith Hoggarth & Co. - Dark Flake Unscented
In need of some hair on your chest?
If so....this will do it; it'll put some hair on your chest. I initially thought perhaps this is just a "sliced version" of Dark Plug. But it is noticeably stronger and is a bit more tasty than their Dark Plug. I also have Dark Flake Aromatic and finally got around to ordering some of this to try without the "dressing" of their "DF-Aromatic". And DF Unscented truly delivers; loads of flavor, bold strength, surprisingly smooth, and nicotine for days. So, despite all of its strength, just know that gentle puffing/sipping will help control the nic'cups. And expect your saliva glands to kick into high gear. This is just a "first few bowls" review and it is quite good. It's so rich and tasty that at times it felt like having a wad of it in my mouth being chewed on. All in all, it is a very enjoyable experience. So it deserves a "Good" (4.0) rating at the very least. I'm going to need more of this...much much more.

Cornell & Diehl - Joie de Vivre 2oz
Buy and store...it demands aging.
This blend is one of my Top Five. A week ago I opened up all of my tins containing plug/cake blends to place into jars; (2)2 oz tins of Joie De Vivre being among them. These two were dated 13 Feb 2023 (sticker on the bottom), coming up on two years, and so I snuck a pinch. OK, three or four pinches before placing the jar back into storage. This is so good...yum! I enjoyed it so much I ordered ten more tins; for aging. These new tins are all dated between Jan. and Nov. 2025. So...once again, I took a pinch of the small trimmings from those new tins; for the purpose of achieving "weight" I suppose. And yuck! So yes, age is required to enjoy this blend. If you gather some of this up, do not expect to get a true representation of how very rewarding this will be in the years to come. While, yes, it is tasty when nearing the two year mark. I am excited to see where it lands some years from now. So my recommendation is to get some, let it sit in its tins, but do not open it until two years have passed from the date on its stickers. Open them then, or even later and taste it, if you must. Transfer into jars and let it age even more.

Cornell & Diehl - Good Morning 2oz
Not the one for me...
This is not, at all, enjoyable for me. I'm giving it an "Average" rating for now. Because it stings my tongue a bit while giving nothing much in return for the pain I receive from it. It's a bit sour...a bit tacky (feels coated with something) and I've yet to enjoy one bowl of it. And this all with it being dated; Oct. '23, I expect it will not improve with age (could be wrong). I'll continue working through this. But I am thankful to only have one 2 oz tin. I'll *Update* this review if necessary. OK...time to *Update* this now; still isn't working for me...it needs some VA sweetness, IMO, so it has 'some' flavor. So, I added 0.5 oz each of Rivertown's Sunrise Select & Crimson Shadow (both stoved months ago...but I do not enjoy them much, alone) to the 2 oz (minus three bowls) of "Good Morning" I have left. Now it's quite tasty, in any pipe, and I can just enjoy what's left. And for still having some of the two RTW blends left, which I do not absolutely love, I've ordered three more tins of this to mix with those two RTW blends; to mix as done before.

Mac Baren - Original Choice 16oz

STG should reconsider their cancelling of this, after their acquisition of Mac Baren. I have one pound of this left; minus an oz or two. It's one of the number of Mac Baren's I snagged when Mac Baren was quickly disappearing, following the news of the acquisition. And every time I load a bowl with it, I think "wow"! This stuff is just yummy. I do not like "aromatics" but with this being one of those....I can't truly say I hate aro's, can I? But yeah, every tobacco I've thrown out or gifted has been aromatic blends (to date; 14 in total). I don't consider this an aromatic, and to me it's just a very mild and tasty smoke. One that I will now need to use sparingly. So, "Thank you" STG! You've managed to screw things up again.

Cornell & Diehl - Dreams of Kadath 2oz

I just went through my stock and pulled out all tins of cake and plug tobaccos to put into jars; Dreams of Kadath among them. I popped open the tins of Kadath and wow! Smelled like grape soda, or Grape Kool-Aid, to me and I thought "yuck"! Not really sure why some here are using the terms "plum"_"fig"_"raisin" ... because I only smell grape so strongly it reminded me of how Nehi Grape soda tasted (maybe you remember it too?). Thankfully the smell doesn't transfer, much, into the smoking of it. Which wasn't, by the way, at all that displeasing (with no dry time). It leans slightly, a tiny bit, over toward the "enjoyable" side of average. So I give it 3.5 rating for now. On the second bowl (the following day) I smoked another bowl, after allowing it to dry for 30-45 minutes, and this was quite nasty and least enjoyable. Because of the "grape" I picked my least expensive pipe (Let Freedom Ring 5th Avenue - Cob w/o a filter) to smoke this from. Anyhow, I intend to keep this one out and smoke it from time to time; from only that one pipe. And *Do Not Dry* it any...is what I will continue doing. So look at all of these reviews; from lowest to highest ratings. You'll see the reviews for this one is, near equally, a hit or miss. But consider giving it a try and see for yourself. *Do Not Dry It Any.* Because, as we all know, our palates differ from one another.

Warped - The Haunting Cake 2oz
Nothing about it is enjoyable...
Just opened two tins, dated Oct. '25, to transfer into a jar. All I could initially think was "another C&D miss." Nothing about it was enjoyable. I got none of the VA sweetness mentioned and not even a slight hint of cigar. It simply fell short...for me. But perhaps this is to change over time. So I will do exactly that and try it again some years down the road. So yes, try it, because others may enjoy the heck out of it. But I can only write what I experienced; from the first bowl, mind you. Perhaps it must require a specific pipe set aside for it, and the one I picked out didn't pair well with The Haunting; 'twas a deep and narrow Neerup. Or it just might be I could have a "numb" palate. So yes, try it. But I wouldn't order bundles of it, at first, until you know for yourself.

G. L. Pease - Gaslight 8oz
I wasn't much of a Lat' fan until now...
So I've only been piping for two years now. I just started down Latakia Lane; having recently (within the last 24 hrs) tried Capt. Earle's (C&D's) Nightwatch and Stimulus Package. Today, though, I tried opening my 2 oz tin of Gaslight (dated: Oct. '24) and I cannot dislike it. Nor can I say I didn't enjoy it because I do...I really do enjoy it. Mine was not in need of any drying, though, as a few others have mentioned. It smoked perfectly; after slicing it, breaking it apart, and loading it. And once lit it needed no relights. The two Capt. Earle's, previously mentioned, will not be reordered. But I will likely be ordering more of this. As will I order more of Capt. Earle's Private Stock (for being so friggin' yummy). Besides this 2 oz tin of Gaslight, I'm happy to already have another 8 oz tin. So I have some time...LOL. So enjoy, I know you will.

Captain Earle's - Stimulus Package 2oz

This one seemingly has !loads/gobs! of Latakia and it is consistent throughout the bowl; top to bottom. It's quite overpowering for someone who's just begun to try Latakia-a-plenty blends. Those others, the Virginia, Oriental and Perique, they are so well hidden I could barely detect them. But I'm sure they are added to somewhat make mellow the Latakia. I have done the same with the other two Capt. Earle's (C&D) blends I have. So know this is only my initial review for each of the three and first time with blends of good amounts of Latakia. And my "initial" ratings, for the three, are: Nightwatch = 3.5 (would be 3.25 if I could), Stimulus Package = 4.0 (would be 3.75 if I could), and Private Stock = 4.5. All for Nightwatch; being a very strong Lat-blend (I will not likely be stocking up on). Private Stock being quite enjoyable (will most definitely stock up and get more). Stimulus Package; while being in between those other two, it is more on the Latakia side (I will likely not be stocking up on). Again, know that these reviews today are from one who's not highly familiar with Latakia (with only two years of piping). Plus, all of the other variables: packing, tamping, pace of draw, pipe choice, etc. and so on. If you love Latakia...try Stimulus Package and/or Nightwatch. If you seek a lovely mild and mannered, and slightly sweet English blend you can smoke all day...try Private Stock.

Peter Stokkebye - PS306 English Oriental Supreme
This blend keeps creeping up the rating board...
This is a very light English; it's more of a Balkan, to me, blend. It initially had more bite than flavor...and even its bite is mild. At first, I could not enjoy smoking this...at all. Especially when I have pounds of Arango Balkan Supreme. Still, this is nowhere near as tasty (to me) as Arango Balkan and is quite, no very, "muted" in comparison. But it has grown on me and is, now, a pleasant blend to enjoy. I'm getting some faint hints of "fruit (roll-up) or fig"- like flavors from it. Especially during the second half of bowls. This might be a decent choice as an introduction to English. But also try PS 52 - Proper English and/or PS 17 English Luxury. That is if sticking with P. Stokkebye blends. So I do recommend you just try a small amount of it; if new to this blend. I started off rating it but 2★ ... and it's worked its way up and is now a 3.5★ for me. All I can now say is "give it a try."

Peter Stokkebye - PS400 Luxury Navy Flake
Not close enough to 'Good' for a higher rating.
Had to recently update this to 3.5★ for it now being a bit above average (see story below). I didn't care for it in early '24 (when first tried) and for thinking, then, it is not even close to being average. It's now been near two years since ordering this back in '24. My issues with it were that it takes a bit of work; mainly in finding a pipe where this is somewhat rewarding in. I've again had to try this in a number of pipes over the past few days. And was again displeased when smoking this. So I thought to try this (my least favorite VA flake) in my least favorite pipe (yes, a Nording Compass)...and voila! The Nording is now dedicated to this Navy Flake. Every draw on it had me thinking; "wow, this is really good." If it were as rewarding/enjoyable in more of my pipes, I would gladly give it more than the 3.5★ I give it today.

Gawith Hoggarth & Co. - Exmoor Mixture

Initial rating of 4.0★ is for it being not the best but not bad either; just "Good." I did, however, just send away for another 0.5 kg of this. As I am working through 4oz I collected earlier this year. This is a 'gooood' blend, and is enjoyable. But it requires some effort. I'll *Update* this review after more time is spent with this. (*Update*) OK, so I do really enjoy this now. Probably going to be ordering another 0.5 kg (or more) of this, soon, because I finally get it. This isn't a blend that's going to knock the socks off of everyone. But it nearly does for me. It reminds me of my Sunday coffee; which is coffee ... topped off with a small splash of Bourbon just for the flavor. When I have a cup of my "Sunday coffee" with a bowl of Exmoor...I nearly taste the same from both; although Exmoor has no alcohol added for enhancing its flavor/aroma. The blend of tobacco, in this, is very pleasing and is mildly sweet. And the retrohale might even be a tad more delightful than when not done. This is just a good-to-excellent blend. So I upgraded from my initial rating of 4.0★ to 4.5★ today.

Cornell & Diehl - Old Joe Krantz
This is a very good one...
I'm already in love with this blend for both its taste and manners. I picked up eight ounces, elsewhere, and just ordered an additional two pounds from here. I didn't give it 5★...only gave 4.5★. Only because it does taste better in some pipes, more than others, and its taste tends to vary a bit more than desired when moisture level changes; i.e. if you pack a pipe, put on a lid, and smoke it later or the next morning. So yeah, you may want to try this in a number of pipes. The find the moisture you find it to be most rewarding and then jar it up tightly. If it delivered the same in most pipes....I'd give it 5★ without hesitation.

Cornell & Diehl - Junkyard Dawg 2oz
Another C&D disappointment...(*Updated* and it's getting better)
This one, is of two tins dated: Jan. `24, was again a bit of a letdown; given the average rating of 4.4★. I don't understand how so many C&D blends are rated 4.0★ or higher here. I love Match: Barking Dog and Sutliff RL-BD (often distributed as Barking Dog substitute/clone). Of which I have 3 lbs of still. I give this 3.0★ (average) today. (*Update*) OK, this blend just keeps creeping upward. So I've now bumped my rating up to 4.0★ (good); which is when I will likely order some more of this. It is still on the mild to weak side. But I am now detecting enjoyable tobacco flavors and find myself "reaching" for it...more often.

Cornell & Diehl - Briar Fox 2oz
It's OK...(*Updated*)
Just had my first bowl of this. Of which I have two tins dated Nov. `23. Although most C&D blends are bland and unimpressive, to me, this one at least delivered some flavor. But this came with some mild bite. So it is just OK for me...for now. I stuck it, from its tin, into a jar and will likely revisit it in time. But I will delete my bookmark, for it, from my 'next to order' list. For not yet being sure I will add more of it to my stash. *Updated*; I have continued working on that first tin, I opened, and it is growing on me in the positive direction. So I just updated from 4★ to 4.5★. And I do, now, plan to add a good bit more to my inventory.

Cornell & Diehl - Bayou Morning Flake 2oz

Not impressed with the first bowl of a tin dated Dec. `24. Great Tin Art though; as is typical with C&D blends for me. Bland and unimpressive smoke w/good tin art. Will have to give this blend some time, a bunch of time...perhaps, before returning to it again. *Update* - It's ten months later; today I adjusted my 3.5★ to 4.5★. A year ago, I was but one year in on my piping. Back then I think I had expectations when trying different blends; thinking "why doesn't this taste like that other VaPer I enjoy?" Also, and due to, I hadn't yet tried very many blends. But now, with new and unfamiliar blends, I look to see "what's here to enjoy?" before passing judgement. And this one does have its own enjoyable traits. From it, I was getting flavors similar to Salty Dogs. But this still has its own respectable uniqueness. So much so, that I will likely be ordering more of it.

Cornell & Diehl - Pegasus
Just OK...(*Updated*)
(*Updated* May '26) Bumping this up to 4.5★ today. It's been more than one year since my original review (below), and I haven't touched Pegasus since...until recently. I originally tried it in a narrow (small diameter) bowl, due to one review, here, stating "He ("Runowski"...the blender) goes so far as to suggest a deep narrow bowl." When I, recently, saw Runowski actually wrote; "Smoking Pegasus is best in a larger bowled pipe, to allow the tobaccos to meld." Suggesting a larger diameter bowl, rather than a "narrow bowl" (as quoted by another). I actually really enjoy this now. Not sure why...could be the one year aging, or my taste is changed? I don't know. But yeah, I intend to get some more Pegasus and put it away for some time; taking my time to get through the remaining 6 or 8 ounces of aged Pegasus I have left. (*Original Review - 3.0★ Mar. '25)* Well, I tried this in one of my pipes that Burley typically shines in. It was just OK. Then I tried it in a slender-bore pipe and not much better. Burley definitely overshadows the others in this blend. But it, itself, isn't an outstanding Burley. Its flavor isn't consistent throughout the bowl. So I give it 3★ today for being a 'T' that is OK, but not likely to become one I would ever stock-up on. I'll most likely just finish it and then close the book on Pegasus.

Cornell & Diehl - Mountain Camp

Yep. Mountain Camp is just downright yummy...from start to finish and is, so far, seemingly so in any pipe. Mine was a bit dry and I recommend leaving it so...but in a sealed jar/container. Because when I tried to rehydrate just enough for a bowl...it went wrong.

Cornell & Diehl - Chenet's Cake 8oz
Not quite there yet...hoping some age helps.
I will start by saying "only pay attention to reviews by those who've tried this when aged." I have none to try, that is aged, so I tried to stove 2oz of my 10oz. Stove-time did improve it, some, but it isn't a blend that is yet convinced me to stock up on. I give it 4.0★ but I want to give it just 3.5★. I just don't want to hurt its average; for mine still being on the fresh side. Time will tell on this one. If you can find a generous soul, willing to send you some of this with some years on it, maybe you can try it and know if you should buy now...and enjoy later.

Cornell & Diehl - Bayou Night
This one seems deserving of a higher rating than its current 3.4★...
...because I just opened up a small 4oz jar, filled from 16oz I bought, that is dated Nov `23. I'm smoking it and thinking "what is going on here? It's quite complex/complicated and thought; "inspiring." I thought "is there anything I can compare this to when I post my review? Because this would be a pleasant substitution for anything I could compare it to and "is this VA and Burley? Nope." I thought of many blends while trying to make those connections. Now I see it is; Latakia, Perique, Virginias, Turkish, and Burleys. Therein lies the "complexity"...I suppose. Other thoughts I had; "this is a nice-tasty blend I could smoke when wanting to give my tongue a break, yet remains full of flavor/s." I see it is rated 4 of 5 on strength. But that seems a bit high. I do not believe this rating is accurate...for it's nic-level seems to deserve a lower rate. And I've had stronger nic-reactions to other 4 of 5 rated blends. So, I do recommend trying this, spend some time and give it a chance in multiple pipes. And just see if you enjoy all it gives you. Which it does plenty of...throughout the bowl (top-to-bottom). This is becoming one of my favorites, in most pipes, but it doesn't deliver in every pipe. It is mechanically easy to smoke, and its taste lasts throughout the bowl.

Tabac de la Semois - Reserve du Patron 3.5oz
Another Fine Burley...from Semois.
I'm a first year piper, going into my second year, and Burley is my preference. I've recently tried "Tabac De La Semois: La Brumeuse" for the first time and I love it. It is one of my rare 5★ picks. But this one gets the same high mark of 5★. Even though I would rate it just a tiny bit below "La Brumeuse"...just not going to rate it at 4.5★. I popped open three 3.5oz bales of this, to put into a large jar, and already smoked a few bowls. Not noticing much of, if any, difference from "La Brumeuse." But it is slightly different. I did notice, from seeing it myself, there's more aniseed in this one. But this could be due only to how I transferred each from their bale into jars. I opened each bale of this and put into a large bowl, upon loosening the brick, and the aniseed was everywhere. Made me feel like I was back in the 70's sorting out seeds, in a shoe-box lid, from another smoke'able leaf. Only, I didn't sort out the aniseed from this Reserve du Patron. Anyhow, and again as was with the La Brumeuse, this is a 'gourmet' Burley. Possibly the finest, but surely, the most flavorful Burley I have yet tried. Always happy to gather more and more of this stuff; when available. It's not one I smoke throughout any whole day. But for those moments...absolutely reaching for and lighting up a bowl of any Burley from Tabac De La Semois.

Gawith Hoggarth & Co. - Kendal Mixed
This is VA forward, in taste, regardless of the percentages...
I am not a huge VA fan...but GH&Co - VA blends are growing on me. More so than any VA I have tried to date; in my first year of piping. So, because of this, you may want to pay more attention to reviews from VA lovers. But I gave this a 4.5★ ...for now; I do always *Update* when deserved. It is a bit moist, so dry it some....and maybe even some more. This does deliver the "citrus" (seemingly grapefruit-like mostly) throughout the bowl when it has moisture in it. I recommend you dry one pinch to the crispiness of a Tabac de la Semois (if familiar with it). So that you can see the wide range this blend can cover from moist to crispy-dry...and then find your own sweet spot thereafter.

Gawith Hoggarth & Co. - Brown Twist
This stuff has gotten better after just one year.
I received this near a year ago. I tried it back then and decided to give it some jar-time. I just opened that jar, dated to have been received Jan. `24, and smoked a bowl. So I've only smoked it in one of my pipes (Savi. Bing's Fav') and it was delightful...for a VA (not the biggest VA fan here). It was gentle, mellow, and wow...flavorful; with a mild sweetness, and all of those other VA notes people say a Dark-VA provides. It's just an enjoyable smoke. It does require some drying-time before loading up; because it is moist. Otherwise, without drying, it is tough to light and keep lit. So, I do plan to add 500g of this to my collection for the future. (*Update*) I did it and have already added 500g more of this to the storeroom. Just going through some of what I already have with some other pipes, now, to start the learning process; as is required for every blend when pipe smoking. I should say you will be tempted to dry this for a long time, but keep the drying of it under an hour. It will feel very moist but it still burns fine; when you find how it prefers to be packed. Over-drying doesn't complement the taste and really isn't required to enjoy this blend. Also, do not restrict/prevent yourself from trying this in a cob. Anyhow, I myself am still learning to smoke G.H. & Co's Brown Twist and enjoying it.

Gawith Hoggarth & Co. - Balkan Mixture
This separates itself from others I've tried...(*Updated*)
Just had my first bowl of a recent 2oz purchase. I am no expert on pipe 'T's...as I have only been at it for one year. I have recently gone through some of my HH Balkan Blend (pkg. dated Mar. 2023) and Arango Balkan Supreme (rec'd Mar. 2024). Because of those two, being enjoyable as they are, I grabbed up this 2oz of GH & Co. Balkan Mixture. The Arango...I love and rated it here at 4.5★ (4.6★ if I could). This one, for me, gets a 4.5★ (4.3★ if I could) for it being just a tiny bit below Arango Balkan...but not much below. It is worthy of trying if you enjoy Balkans. *Update (nearly one year after receiving this)* - Just opened up the jar to try again. The first few puffs taste amazing, wow! But then that goes away. I'm hoping time will encourage that initial flavor to remain throughout the bowl. We'll see...in time.

Peter Stokkebye - PS403 Luxury Bullseye Flake
Good, fresh, but better(?) with age.
While it is "good" fresh...it's possibly better with age. I have pounds (near 12) of this and "stoved" maybe 4 lbs. of it in Jars. It's not perfect but between 4.5 and 5.0, I have to give it the 5.0 rating. I am working through that which I already stoved; allowing the rest to age naturally. I typically rub a dozen or more coins/medallions and place that into a small - 4 oz jar. Then, from the jar, I load it into a Savinelli 316, or 122, and it delivers a warm, buttery, and slightly sweet reward. With a subtle hint of tangy spice in there as well. It's just always a joy to smoke.

Rivertown Tobacco Works - Mystic Moor

I purchased these four, 4oz, samples of the RTW blends: Sunrise Select__Oak & Ember__Crimson Shadow__Mystic Moor. This one is the fourth/last blend I tried...and well, it's OK. I tried Sunrise Select first, Oak & Ember second, Crimson Shadow, and this Mystic Moor lastly. All of these I tried are just so-so. Mystic Moor, though, tries coming through as an English. Only the VA tries taking the spotlight here, leaving the Lat' a bit weak; and the VA needs some age. It, the VA, hits you with a highly citrus punch...just as did the others I tried. With Crimson Shadow being a bit more mellow, for the Red VA, than the others; for what I assume to be bright/light-VA. Although Oak & Ember tastes a bit different, for its Burley, Oak & Ember isn't likely to ever encroach upon the top of, or halfway up, my Burley-blend list. These are all pure 'T' but they are mild and, well, a bit bland/fresh. Perhaps perfect for an all day smoker, maybe, for blending something in to add some flavor/taste, or even after some age. I just removed Sunrise Select from the oven; after 2.5 hrs @ 190°F. I'll give it a couple of weeks in its jar before going round two with it and see if it improves. I'll likely stove this and the others as well. And then I will *Update* my reviews of these four RTW samples. My 3★ rating, for me...so you know, is what I rate blends when they leave me on the fence; where the 2★-side is "not likely going to buy again" and the 4★-side is "likely going to keep around." (*Updated*) I downgraded this one from 3★ to 2.5★ because initially, upon lighting this after two weeks since I stoved this, it tasted good. I was actually thinking of upgrading it to 4★. But that quickly disappeared after maybe just 1/4 bowl. So it still may have a chance because I will now smoke this in more of my pipes. Of the four I tried, this one and Oak & Ember might be purchased again. But, as of now, only Oak & Ember looks to be the one RTW blends, I sampled, to be added to my stock in the future.

Sunrise Select, also a very mild blend, leans more toward the citrus tang; but again, a very mild/subtle flavor is delivered. And so I still give them both just 3★. Gawith Hoggarth & Co. - American Delite
This one learned me something...
First Bowl...and right out of the ziploc, containing a 2oz sample, I thought this one is the biggest letdown of all GH &Co. blends I've yet tried (of six). I thought if you like super blandness, then this one fits that bill. However, for that reason, I could see it being someone's all-day smoke. Then, after having some more, I edited this review and bumped it up from 2.5★ to 4.5★ and here's why; I smoked this in one of my pipes, after my initial review, and it tasted pretty darn good. But I forgot to take note of which pipe it was. So I then smoked it once in each of my briar-pipes (near two dozen) to find "that one pipe." I noted it only tasted "great" in 2 to 3 of them all. So I next thought of trying it in all of my briars again. But next time, while using the balsa filters (in those made for the 6mm filters) and removing all of the 6mm adapters I had installed (for the reduction of hassle...for just started piping one year ago and knowing any better). Now this blend tastes good in every 6mm filter pipe that didn't make the list before. And so I ordered 1 lb more of American Delite. I now say this is worthy of giving it a try. Try it in every pipe of yours, use the filters if so equipped, even let it dry some. But not too much (10 min's max for what I rec'd) because I left some out for nearly an hour and it really became bland. It is especially worthy of giving it a try if seeking a mild, and unoffensive, yet tasteful blend. Plus, this is one you can have numerous times each day without any fear of bite.

Gawith Hoggarth & Co. - Dark Bird's Eye Vintage Cut
This one is growing on me...updated from 3.5★ to 4.0★.
I would recommend this; for trying an 'oz' or two. This one is better with the moisture left "as-is"; when received. I tried a couple of bowls after allowing it to dry some, from a handful of minutes for one bowl, to crispy dry for another; and it is better as-received. *Update*: after having more of it, and for not drying it prior to filling a bowl, this one is growing on me. So it is now a firm 4.0★....and is encroaching upon a 4.5★ with each bowl. This blend is definitely "Burley strong/dominant." But it comes with a tasty bit of sweetness in the first half of a bowl with the savory side of Burley in the second half. I'm now considering ordering more of it....no, wait, I just ordered 1/2 of a kilo!

Peter Stokkebye - PS41 Cube Cut
Not Yet Ready For Prime-Time...(*Updated*)
When I ordered this, my 4oz, I thought it was 100% Burley; for being a cube cut. When it arrived, and I transferred it into a jar, I scooped out a bowl and lit it. At the forefront, predominantly, there was Virginia flavors...and "not yet ready for prime-time" VA. I recalled "thinking isn't this Burley?," and so I went and looked again and saw it is VA & Burley; but listed as "Family: Burley." Anyhow, it seems it could be a favorable smoke....in time. I'll wait and see. *Update* - Been nearly one year and.........not yet ready to enjoy. It's close, as I am now tasting some pleasant 'T'-flavors. But it is still a bit on the "hot" side and this is distracting for me. I'll check again in time and report back.

Arango - Balkan Supreme
A "Good" Balkan (*Updated*...after two years)
For me, being new to piping in Jan. '24, I rated this between 4.5★ and 5.0★. (*Update*) Keeping this at 4.5★ for now; I still enjoy this blend (order date: Mar. 2024). Yes...it is on the mild side for English/Balkan blends I've tried, so far, and this is fine by me. Still, for its mildness, it is quite pleasing and enjoyable and progresses through all of the English flavors you hope to experience throughout every bowl. When I smoke C&D Engine #99, another Oriental-forward "Balkan"/English-blend, I think of Arango Balkan Supreme; every time. With Arango Balkan, with most any blend...really, I typically draw gently and the expected flavors are all there, except for in a pipe or two. So I suggest trying this, and all blends really, in a number of pipes. I find even my favorites aren't suited to deliver in every pipe. Oh, and yes, there are other competitive English blends that are quite good. Just try to not compare or have expectations. All Balkans, English, VaPers, etc. are not the same. If they were there would be no need for more than one blend of each. Balkan Supreme is one I never hesitate to grab. Kramer's (C&D) Father Dempsey is another of my go-to English blends. Engine #99 is a must have on hand Balkan-blend. P. Stokkebye's Proper English or English Luxury...both are good English blends. And G.L. Pease's Gaslight and Chelsea Morning, too, are also great for me. And just about any Drucquer & Sons offerings.

Tabac de la Semois - La Brumeuse 3.5oz
Different, Interesting, and a Wonderful Burley...for a Change.
Just received two 3.5 oz of this, and had my first bowl....and then some hours later; another bowl of it. As in the product description, and some reviews, I will not attempt to add moisture to it. And I also packed the bowl on the tight side and tamped a bit more firmly when smoking. But you will know how much is needed to control heat and burn. I did notice the licorice notes, mentioned by others, when I opened the packs to add to a jar. However, I did not notice it (the licorice) when smoking. This has a really great room-note...it's mild to smoke, and isn't as strong of a Nic' buzz as they have it rated here. If you are into Burley, or want to try a different yet excellent tasting Burley than those you may have had before, then try this one. The price may keep you from this one becoming your daily; I did nearly give it a 4★or 4.5★ for the $/oz price alone. But I decided to rate just the tobacco; for it's sake alone. I suggest you try this in a number of your pipes and find which of them delivers the best taste, for you, when paired together. I've found I enjoy it more in two of my briars, and both have a small diameter bowl; 0.66 inch and 0.79 inch. But in a large-diameter pipe bowl, the tastes become more muted...and it all changes. The best way to describe it, at its best, is; it's like having a sip of Gin and a puff of a good cigar...with the taste of gin still lingering.

Missouri Meerschaum - Drawdown 2oz

(*Feb. '26 UPDATE*) So ... I've now been piping for two years, and I have learned "first bowl ratings" aren't truly fair. Also, I have since learned the importance of simply enjoying what each blend has to offer. My tins are dated nearly three years; May '23, and I recently opened all four tins and put it all into a jar. This blend isn't one to knock your socks off, or will it? Honestly, if you take the time in learning how it likes to be smoked, it will reward you. And you will likely find it to be pleasant-to-enjoyable. For some reason it doesn't play well with a few pipes in my collection. So, best to not have high expectations before lighting your first bowl, especially if not yet aged, and see if it grows on you too. I now find myself unable/unwilling to take it out of "rotation" so to put it back into the closet. With all of that, I today upgrade to 4.5★ from 2.5★ and I will be ordering more DRAWDOWN; so to give it time to perfect itself. While I work on the remainder of the first 8oz, I purchased, over the next few years. (*Original Review*) I see the other two reviews and am lost for words. Because it gives me nothing notable to report; be it good or bad. It comes as a 'partly ready rubbed' cut, as in the lengthy description, and it is not ribbon as shown for "Cut"; but no big deal. Tin note is pleasing and the taste....well, again, not much.

Captain Earle's - Reflections 2oz
First Bowl Wasn't Bad
I just started piping, nearly four months ago. So take this 'first bowl' review with that in mind. Today I thought "What's Next?" I saw I have four Captain Earle blends. I wanted to open something more "English" to try...and I see I have three tins each of three Earle's blends, but just one tin of 'Reflections.' So I looked at the star-ratings and saw Reflections was the lowest rated of the four I have. I then found the tin and noticed it's dated June 2022; one month shy of two years old. So I popped its lid and broke apart the cake. When I lit it up...I was really enjoying it. Couldn't quite yet declare what I was tasting but it was pleasing, nonetheless. It was a bit better, though, the first half of the bowl.

Gawith Hoggarth & Co. - Kendal Kentucky Vintage Cut
Good So Far ... *updated 9 months later*
I just had a "first bowl" of this and I can not yet give a pure review. But I wasn't disappointed at all. The rest is going into a jar. So I give it a 4.5★ rating; in keeping with the current overall average. *Update*...some nine months later; Wow! This is really good. Just opened my jar, with this in it, and tried a bowl two days ago. This is far above and beyond all other blends, about 3 dozen, I've tried this year (being my first year). It's got such a nice and noticeable tobacco taste. It is a bit strong....so you may experience those "niccups" I've only imagined before trying this one. But this happened only during my first bowl. Also, it tastes best, at least for me, in a smaller diameter bowl. Tried it in my Bent POT (Savi w/0.92" diameter) pipes, larger diameter bowls, and wasn't as flavorful/enjoyable as in a pipe (with near 0.66" to 0.79" diameter) such as: Billiards, Bing's Fav', Eltang Basic, etc.. Even of those, it's best in one pipe (Nording "Erik the Red" Billiard) more than in others. It's second best in my Eltang Basic pipes. So, dedicate a briar to this one...after you've found "the one."

Cornell & Diehl - Crowley's Best
This one is interesting and pleasant. (*Updated* after two years)
I just received 8oz of this and just now had a bowl. So yes, this is another one of those "after-one-bowl" review. I just started piping in mid-Jan. 2024; two months ago. I didn't look at which T's this blend has in it. What I did get was something I am unfamiliar with. I sat here thinking "is this my first VaPer?" I was so confused by this. Once it burned to near the halfway mark it got a bit more interesting, yet I wasn't sure what to attribute this to. I couldn't wait to go look to see if I was correct. Only to later learn; I was wrong. It is: Perique, Latakia, and Burley. I will likely change today's Star rating in the future, because that's the fair thing to do. But for now, I give it the rating matching the overall average for this; and for it being my first bowl. (*Update* Jan. 2026) This now has 2+ years of age and again, I had no idea of what is in this; for not having looked first. But I went out this morning, with my coffee, and lit the bowl. So here it is; first thoughts were "...this is very mild and difficult to pinpoint what 'T' I am tasting, but it's very pleasant." As I progressed, this got more tasty when gently sipped. There's an interesting 'T' flavor accompanied by a hint of sweetness. "Intrigue" is the one word best describing my time with this. And, for grabbing and keeping my attention throughout, it left me wanting to stock up with more of this. Then allowing it to sit for two years (minimum). So today, I will leave my original rating right where it is; at 4.5★.

Old Dominion - The Dutchman Clay Pipe
These are worth trying.
I'm new to piping at age 61 yrs. In the past few weeks I've ordered more than two dozen pipes. Both this "The Dutchman," and their "Williamsburg," are both great pipes. I would, now, always recommend a beginner to start with a Clay pipe. So to first learn pipe smoking before moving up to briars; so to build cake before burning up a new briar. Because if you can learn to smoke, a Clay pipe, cool enough to hold onto its bowl...you are 'then' ready to smoke from a briar. I highly recommend trying at least one; The Dutchman or the Williamsburg. I added near 1.5 inches of 5/16" (8mm) heat-shrink tube to the mouth pieces of each. Cleaning them is as easy as running it through a 2 hour self-clean cycle in your oven but first, and obviously, remove the heat-shrink tubing.

Cornell & Diehl - Izmir Turkish
I used mine to mix my own English Blend.
I haven't smoked this separately, but I mean to (so to learn to identify Turkish tobacco flavor in blends). Because I just started piping mid-Jan. 2024. I did collect 4oz of this and I mixed all but a pinch of the 4oz (15%) of it to 16oz (60%) of Daughters and Ryan's: Windsail Silver, and 6.7oz (25%) of C&D's Latakia for making my own English blend. The three were very dry, perfect for accurate mixing weights, so I used OUZO Metaxa w/water, from a dropper bottle, for adding a bit of licorice flavor and moisture of course. Gently worked it all together, rehydrating as needed, in a Rubbermaid (2.5 gallon) tub w/red-top. And Voila! The mix is yummy. I have a number of blends, open currently, that I have daily. And I find this, my own mix, is the one I'm reaching for, or wanting to reach for, the most.

Cornell & Diehl - Latakia
Used this to mix my own English blend.

I did collect 8oz of this and I mixed 6.7oz (25%) of it to 16oz (60%) of Daughters and Ryan's: Windsail Silver, and 4oz (15%) of C&D's Izmir Turkish for making my own English blend. Cornell & Diehl - Morley's Best
I do enjoy this blend....every day.
(*UPDATE*) Bumping this down from 4.5★ to 4.0★. I still really enjoy this blend. Just not now sure I will be restocking my shelves with it in the future. But I will keep its "bookmark" saved for when I run out; just in case. (*Original*) Four weeks ago I bought an 8oz bulk bag and I transferred it into a latch-lock Ball jar when it arrived; around three weeks ago. When I did so, it had that typical smell of an English blend (nearly). What I am trying to figure out, now, is; over the past few days, when I open its jar, it has a strong, almost, fermenting fruit smell. I removed it all yesterday, spread it out, and allowed it to dry for near three, maybe four, hours. Beside the fruity smell, it did feel a bit moist. It still has that sweet fruity smell, now that it's drier, yet still tastes great. Just not sure what the tobacco is going through at the moment; regarding the smell upon opening the jar. Currently I nearly have this daily, but I don't find myself always tempted to reach for it. So, this is one you may also find to be worthy of having around as well. It's smoke is extremely comfortable. And for me is reminiscent, again, of English blends...but more mellow, so to speak. I'm enjoying it nearly every morning, w/coffee, in a large diameter bowl such as my Savinelli 320's and 321's, or in Savinelli and Rossi 316's.

Villiger - English Export 1.5oz
Hard to rate this...
First bowl impressions...will update if warranted. Hard to rate this; when comparing it to a limited number of other available "American style (w/Burley): English/Balkan" blends. At first I'm thinking "not a terrible American/English budget-blend; and the price?!?...not bad." But still, at this price of $55/lb, I would always choose C&D's 'Morley's Best' at $43/lb in bulk; for my American-style English. With that said, it isn't horrible. In fact I kind of enjoyed it. It is cut a bit rough and inconsistent. There are some larger bits of leaf mixed in. And when your ember hits a large piece of oriental, or other, that's all you're going to get. It's like a box of tobacco-chocolates. So it may be better to use a large diameter bowl with this blend, as you might for any complex blend, so the ember is burning more of the various components at the same time. Which I will eventually do; my first bowl was in a Billiard. I think anyone would enjoy this at some level. But I give it 2.5 Stars because I am in between my 2 Star (2; is OK but I wouldn't buy it again) and a 3 Star (3; I like it but am on the fence to buy again or not). I wanted to rate it as a 'budget' American/English blend. But at, again, $55/lb...it isn't truly a bargain when compared to other bulk offerings. I would suggest trying it, if you enjoy American style English blends. I mean it does have Perique and Oriental in addition to the: VA, Burley, and Latakia in Morley's Best. Try it in a large diameter bowl and see what you think. *Update* I've bumped this down from 2.5 Stars to 1.0 Stars. I've finished with it and I never really enjoyed it. Smoking it was always a chore because once lit, if you can call it that, it never was happy to just burn. Work, work, work...and never really got to spend a minute of smoking it for the enjoyment of it. So; a 1 Star rating from me is given to one I really wish I had never experienced. And this is one of those blends.

Cornell & Diehl - Gentleman Caller 2oz
This really works for me...
A few days ago, I received one 2oz tin of this (G.C.) and I put it away. A day later I received about 1.5oz of Crooner (another Deer Tongue infused blend), by C&D, from a youtube creator. So I tried Crooner that evening, in an Old Dominion Dutchman, and fell in love with the taste. This morning I just had to open the tin of G.C. and it too is now loved. So save some of this, and Crooner, for me and my next order. I recommend a light packing of the bowl (more so w/Crooner) and resist the urge to tamp; doing so, lightly, only when necessary. I do prefer the two in both my O.D. Dutchman and my Clarin Canadian clays. The two blends also work well in a Cob, but again, with light tamping. I found them more enjoyable when holding the mouthpiece forward, allowing an open seal of the lips for drawing in fresh air during the draw. Using the tip of my tongue to both grab the flavor and monitor the heat on the intake. I will likely revise my 4.5 Star rating (being my initial impression), on both this and Crooner, to 5 Stars soon. Because I am leaning strongly toward wanting both Gent Caller and Crooner on the daily. With "wanting it around daily" being my standard for me to give up a 5 Star rating. With those I really like and only wanting it from time to time; deserving of a 4 Star rating.

Cornell & Diehl - Crooner 2oz
I like this...a lot!
*Update*: This is still really good...all of mine is from 2023 and I still have more than two pounds. I always have some in a "latch-lid" jar...as it is a perfect blend for scooping. I now smoke this in any pipe, as I've learned to just slow down and draw softly; allowing the flavor to come to me...rather than trying to draw flavor from it. (*Original Review*) I only load this, Crooner, into my Churchwarden or Churchwarden-like pipes. I favor this in my Missouri Meerschaum Co. - Cobbit: Shire & Elf pipes. Also, I will use my long-stem clay pipes. But in a "clay" I first load a small nest of ribbon-cut Burley, into the bowl, before filling up w/Crooner. So to keep the small cubes, they are small, from traveling into the stem of those clay pipes with a large airway at the bowl. Also, if you keep this in a 32 oz latch-lid, wide-mouth, jar...you can simply use the pipe and scoop Crooner into it. Then just light, sip, and enjoy.

Clarin Clay - The Canadian One
Wouldn't buy another.
Granted, it is a nice pipe and it is, at first, seemingly made well. My issue with it is the small airway through the stem to the bowl. It can't be more than 2mm. And the airway doesn't have a smooth transition into the bowl. Every pipe cleaner I try passing through the stem must be carefully fed into it, mm by mm, in order to prevent the cleaner from bending. Because once it bends you cannot even straighten the cleaner and continue using that cleaner. You must try another fresh and straight pipe cleaner. Then, if your pipe cleaner does reach the bowl, the pipe cleaner gets stuck, on the step up to the bowl, just before it can pass through into the bowl. I would choose three Old Dominion pipes, Williamsburg or The Dutchman, over this Clarin; equaling about the same cost. I have three of each of these Old Dominion Clay pipes: (3)Williamsburg and (3)The Dutchman. Neither of the Old Dominions give me any trouble. And they clean completely when placed on a rack for a 2-hour self-clean cycle in the oven; as do all clay pipes.

Daughters & Ryan - Windsail Silver
Good bargain...is all I can say.
This surprised me because upon first impressions I'm looking at an extremely dry "Bale" of tobacco. I do see many large stem-sized veins mixed in...and I spent many minutes removing as many as I could. However, when one buys 'Bulk tobacco' that is very dry, as this is, there's a bonus; you receive much more than if it were moistened. Anyhow, I rate it at 3.5★ with; 3.0★ being given to a tobacco I am on the fence with, and 4★ is given to a tobacco I may keep on hand. But this is likely to end up being one I stay away from in the future.

Missouri Meerschaum - Party Line 2oz
Just OK, and nothing to celebrate. (*Updated*)
(*Update* Mar. '26) Just opened my other two tins; to swap over into a jar. These are dated May 30, 2023. The tin "note" seems to me to be more of a sweeter bourbon than whiskey. And the tin note is lasting throughout each bowl; and lingers in the aftertaste. Yes, you will continue to taste it. I still feel I am learning to smoke this, but for now I have bumped up my rating from 2.0★ to 3.5★ for it now being between average and good. I will adjust, again of course, if deserved. (Original Review) Not sure why they call this an Aromatic. It reminds me of C&D's Night Train; both in tin note and taste. Only Night Train is less expensive if bought in bulk. In addition, the absence of Virginia in Party Line doesn't distinguish it far enough apart from Night Train. So I would recommend trying Night Train before Party Line. For me it is, at the moment, 2-Stars. Because this is one I would not keep in stock to partake of from time to time. I have three tins of Party Line, with one of those three open. Perhaps some age on the other two tins will put me back up on the 3.0★ fence. But right now I am slightly leaning toward this remaining on the 2★ side of the 3★ fence. Party Line has a funny way, though, of putting me on both sides; as I keep changing my rating from 2 to 3.5 Stars. Sometimes it's disappointing and other times give me that "maybe" feeling and thoughts.

Cornell & Diehl - From Beyond 2oz
Pretty dang good...it's Far Out!
From beyond is Far Out! Smoked in Rossi Antico 8316 and a couple of Savinelli 316 KS's. I love complex blends in those bent pots. Also, I enjoyed "From Beyond" the most when dried to nearly a crisp. All of the great flavors shine then, and sipping a bowl has no ill effects. Just delicately keep the ember atop the fresh tobacco and your good to go. My Stars given is: 4=really good and want some around to smoke from time to time. And 5=so very good, I want to have it daily. So I give it 4.5 for it being a Small Batch run. And for that reason, I know I have to be stingy with it. If any of this is left on the shelves...get some, let it dry, and try it in a large-diameter bowl.

Missouri Meerschaum - Great Dane 1.5oz

I've just started piping in mid January. Yesterday, after collecting dozens of blends the past 1.5 months, I thought "I may not even like these Cherry Blends." So I began trying them all. Yesterday I got through a bowl of each of these: Paladin: Wild Cherry _ Missouri Meerschaum: Taste of Temptation _ Sillem's: Red _ P.Stokkebye: PS3 Cherry _ Cobblestine Indulge: Cherry Delight. Of those I tried, they rank: number one: Sillem's red ... and number two: PS3 Cherry. But this Great Dane blend leaves those two far far behind. Yes, I do understand it is not a Full-Cherry flavoring; with "vanilla and caramel." But it is so much more pleasing of a smoke. Its taste did dissipate a bit, at about 3/4 down the bowl during my first bowl. But even then it doesn't turn offensive. My first bowl process: Dry it out well, yes; well...took nearly one and a half hour for a decent portion to fill a bowl to dry. I packed it a bit loosely with attention to good airflow ... poked a hole down the center, and checked the flow again. Once lit, I kept the ember touching fresh tobacco by tamping lightly; two or three times only was needed throughout the bowl. And then sipped gently. It burns very well, its taste nearly lasts throughout the bowl, and it gives off no offensive taste nor aftertaste. I rated it 4.5 Stars; in between 4 and 5. For it being between me wanting some on hand to smoke a bowl from time to time (my 4-Star criteria) and 5-Stars for being one I gotta have every day (my 5-Star criteria). *UPDATE* Yesterday I dumped 3 oz (contents of 2 pouches) from its Mason jar; into a glass pie plate for drying. Because I tried a bowl without drying; big mistake! I left it out overnight and it was still too moist this morning. So I laid out some paper towels so to spread out the tobacco even thinner. This stuff is so much better when dried WELL...very WELL. If dried and then dried some more, so it no longer feels tacky and makes that "rustling" sound, your ready for: no bite, generous plumes of clouds, and a sweet smoke. I am using Clay pipes (Old Dominion: Williamsburg and Dutchman) in getting these results.

Cornell & Diehl - Night Train 16oz
Not sure what everyone else is smoking, but...(*Updated*)
Not sure how this blend was, as described, 4 or more years ago when many of these reviews were entered. I ordered 1 lb; dated Jan. 9, 2024. So, I've had three bowls of it today and all I get is something of a bitter-tart/citrus taste; but only after about the first quarter or third of the bowl. I expect to update this, when I do revisit this in the years to come. Anyhow, for now, I give it 3.0★. (*Update* Jan. 11, 2026) I finally got back to this, been two years now, and I'll just leave it at 3★. It now has what others may call a "dark dried/stewed fruit" flavor; only when gently "sipped" though. However, this doesn't mean it's a fruit I enjoy. And at other times it comes off a bit "chemically" laced; displeasing if you will. I now wish I hadn't started with 1 lb. of this. But who knows...time may work its magic on this. If so, I will be able to enjoy what I have left. If not....I'll likely give it away or toss it out. Because a tobacco making you want to put it right back in the closet, after a bowl, isn't one worth messing with.

Paladin - Black Cherry 7oz

I just couldn't wait to be rid of this blend...and I am finally done with it. I added the last of what I had of it to another 'hot' blend to mellow the other some. And was able to finish it all. Moving on now...

Carter Hall - Carter Hall 14oz
My favorite OTC-Codger blend...
Favorite of all OTC's I've tried in my 1.5 months of piping; that is. I recently grabbed five qt-size latch-lock jars, by Ball, for my tubs of OTC's; Carter Hall_Velvet_Granger_Paladin BC_and SWR got tossed for being fermented into a "vinegar w/Cream of Tartar" bomb; that ruined my taste buds for nearly two days. I'm probably going to replace SWR w/Captain Black. Anyhow, Carter Hall holds a firm lead over all of the other OTC blends I have. Cannot give it a five because there are so many other blends I find to be much better. If I were reviewing only Codger blends...it would get a five. But for me, with the star rating here, and considering all other blends; One is for "wish I hadn't experienced what I just did." Two is for "it was OK, I can deal with it, but not likely going to selectively re-order it again." Three is for "I'm on the fence; whether or not I will try it again. And whether or not, to add more of it to the collection. I'm 50/50 on this one at the moment." Four is for "definitely going to grab another tub/tin to have on hand." Five is for "most likely going to add this to nearly every order; because I gotta have it daily." *Update* I'm bumping my Star rating from 4.0 to 4.5 today. Because I just enjoy CH enough to do so. I do prefer CH in one of my clay pipes over a briar or cob though. Because CH really does shine when smoked in a clay. Likely due to the long stem of a clay has great moisture wicking ability; like a Brigham Rock Maple Distillator does.

Granger - Granger 7oz
Better when dried a bit.
I am new to piping, at just 1.5 months in. So I've been collecting numerous blends in that time...many I desire to age a good bit. So with that I picked up several 'Ball' qt.-size latch-lock jars for transferring tubs of OTC Codger blends I plan to smoke while giving the others time in a bottle. I have Granger_Carter Hall_ Velvet_Paladin in those latch jars now. Granger is currently my second favorite of those; second to Carter Hall. But I am still learning...and have discovered Granger, as with many other blends, is better when I spread some out to dry. Nearly to being crispy. It changes from having a bit much of a citrus tang to it, and minor 'bite,' to being a warm tasty treat with fantastic plumes and clouds. Carter Hall is one I will add more of to my collection...and if Granger gets added as well, then I will likely edit this to up it to a two or four star recruit. *Update* I am reducing my 3.5 to 3.0 stars and am currently leaning toward reducing 2.0 stars if I find Granger, after 7oz's, not enjoyable enough to consider buying it again. I must say that S.T.G.'s acquisition of all these OTC/Codger blends, are not doing them any favors. The S.T.G. is certainly not concerned enough for maintaining the quality of these blends they now own.

Newminster - No. 400 Superior Navy Flake

I have this jarred for now. But I removed a bit to try fresh before putting the rest in a jar. I would likely update my three star rating, later, when I get to work on the rest. Right now I'm on the three-star fence until trying some aged and then deciding if this is one I will reorder or pass on. With what I've tried, for it being fresh and no age on it, all I got was a bit of spice and a tiny bit of bite. With a slight hint of fruit or floral notes...truly cannot detect what it is just yet. (*Update*); nearly a year has passed and not much changed with this. So...I stoved the remaining 8oz jar of this and it was a tiny bit more pleasant to smoke. I had it in the oven at 190°F for two hours...and am curious what it could be with three to four hours on it. It turned out to be more mellow, the bite nearly went away, and I was able to somewhat enjoy it.

Sir Walter Raleigh - Regular 7oz

*Update: I just spoke with SP and they are aware of the problem w/Sir Walter Raleigh. So you might want to contact them before purchasing SWR and ask if they have remedied this(end/update).* Review: I just started piping a bit over 1.5 months ago. I recently picked up five 'Ball' - Latch-lock jars for five Codger blends I plan to use while numerous other blends are collected and aged. So I decided on and ordered: Velvet 7oz_Paladin 7oz_Granger 7oz_Carter Hall 14oz_and Sir Walter Raleigh 7oz. They arrived and I began the transfer process. The first I opened was SWR. I wanted to smell it and when I did, I was smacked in the face with a strong and nasty stench of vinegar. Causing me to pull away instantaneously. I put the tobacco into its jar,and in thinking I need to try and smoke a bowl; I quickly found this to be a big mistake. The taste was just as it smelled, vinegar and tart, but even more so. It was like a slurry of vinegar and cream of tartar in my mouth. I quickly dumped out the pipe. Unfortunately, the taste lasted and lingered in my mouth for more than 24 hrs. I wish I could give this a fair review, this 7oz tub of SWR; with nothing wrong with it. But I cannot do so at this time. In reviews I've heard and read people are detecting notes of: fruity_nutty_cocoa_even licorice. I got none of those....I got an overpowering tart-vinegar blast. Out of all of the blends I've gathered, and those I've opened, this has happened but one other time. It was a tin of SPC's Plum Pudding. But this SWR was even stronger; in both its smell and taste.

G. L. Pease - Chelsea Morning 2oz
Good from the first bowl
Just received 2oz and (2)8oz tins (dated Feb. '24). Opened up the two ounce tin yesterday, the tin note was definitely English-like, and put it into a Mason. This morning I loaded the bowl, grabbed a cup of black coffee, and began. The smoke was completely pleasing, very tasty, and the blend is unobtrusive. In that no leaf bullies the others...they all played well with each other. I can only think to say it is quite possibly a nearly perfect blend. (*Update*: Nov. '25) From the 2oz jar; this is still a very pleasing smoke from top to bottom and doesn't offend at all. It also seems to play well with any pipe I load it into. It can be a tiny bit spicy-hot. So just take your time with it. I have more than one pound and intend to grab some more. If it were great in most pipes...I'd give it 5★ without hesitation.

CAO - Eileen's Dream 50g
Pleasantly holds its flavor.
I changed this from 4.0 to 3.5 Stars because it nearly held its flavor throughout the bowl. But sometimes I get nothing from it. Also, so you know, my Star ratings are: 1 = I wish I hadn't experienced that one _ 2 = was tolerable, but never again _ 3 = was OK, but left me on the fence as to whether or not to buy more or not _ 4 = I like it and it is good enough to always have around to smoke from time to time _ 5 = I gotta have this every day. I have nothing to compare this blend to, but I was nearly about to order C&D's Nutty Irishman. But when going through the reviews for it, I saw one reviewer saying they preferred CAO's Eileen's Dream. So I instead got four tins of this. I might have rated this higher, but I tried my first bowl of it in the one pipe of mine I turn to the least. And still the flavor was lasting, and not bad at all. What I tasted was subtle, but I definitely detect mint throughout the bowl. But not overpowering mint...just present. A light but sweet cream came through during the first two thirds of the bowl. Accompanying the sweet cream, for the first two thirds, was something reminding me of dark chocolate. But the chocolate was shy. The Cavendish appears at about the last third or quarter of the bowl. And stands side by side with the mint. Not above or below it, just equal with it. And when the chocolate had left the scene. I detected nutty notes up in the first half, making me think "is there Burley in this?" But it wasn't lasting...only made a drive-by and waved. This was my first bowl; out of a fresh tin, dated May 2023...it is now Feb 2024. It seemed its moisture was just a bit in need of five to ten minutes of drying time, and then off I went. For me, giving 3.5 Stars (instead of four now) is because I am now in between me being on the fence of whether or not I would try it again and I like it and I would try it again. I still have two tins left. So obviously I will be smoking it again. But I do not expect to enjoy this more than what I get from it today. Which isn't much. So it will likely end up at 2 or 3 Stars. Just so many more enjoyable blends that fall well above this one.

Seattle Pipe Club - Plum Pudding 2oz
I don't get it?
I don't get it...is the best description I have for it. With a name like 'Plum Pudding' I expected to detect some flavor. Mine was dry and had only a strong vinegar tin note. In trying to be gentle when crumbling it, it still crumbles nearly to dust. When smoking it, I got nothing but the vinegar tin note for the first half of a bowl. Turning into a smokey bitterness. But it was mostly nothing more than a smokey mist of nothingness that I wish were gone. My first order also included the Amphora 5-Sampler pack, and the English Blend in that is even better than this Plum Pudding. I've tried this Plum Pudding in four different pipes now, in hopes one combination shows an improvement; including a Clay pipe. But it repeatedly gives me nothing to write home about. Sadly, before smoking the Plum Pudding for the first time, and based on reviews, I also ordered the SPC - Plum Pudding Special Reserve (awaiting delivery of it still). And I am now fearful it may also make it onto my "Never Again" list. I wouldn't recommend it, nor will I try it again. Did I simply get a bad portion of a batch in my 2 oz tin of slices? Because: "tasty, delicious, the best English, Plum flavor, too wet to stay lit, glorious, amazing, citrusy bouquet, and second to none (not true) is not what's in the tin that I received. If I had the tin I would send it back. Just to rid myself of it. *Edit*; on a hunch I phoned SmokingPipes and they said it shouldn't smell like that and they fixed it for me. So with that I understand what I received was plainly "not right." I do appreciate them at SmokingPipes; for their helpful customer service. One day, not far away, I'll try this blend again. In hopes I get a tin w/o fermentation issues...and reevaluate the star rating given today. *UPDATE* So I bumped my Star rating to near the average; in trusting those of you who didn't get a strong sour-vinegar tin of tobacco like I did. I bumped my rating up because SP took care of my bad tin, and I threw away my tin. But wanted to leave my review just to express my experience with it. I've yet got up the nerve to try another tin. But when I do, I will likely adjust my Star rating as I find necessary.

Amphora - Amphora Sampler
I tried it...and NOPE!
I ordered this along with my first pipe and tobacco order, thinking this might help me discover the path to take to find my personal favorite types of blends. Doing so did not help me at all. Instantly I knew three blends were not for me. But the English, my favorite of the five, and Virginia blends; not so bad, but not great either. So would I buy this 5-Pk Sampler again? Nope! And I wouldn't recommend this to anyone. I give it just 2 Stars; my rating for tobacco that is just OK...but I would never buy it again. For me to give this 3 Stars would be for "me being on the fence; whether or not to buy again." And I am firmly on the side of the fence that prevents me from buying it.

Old Dominion - Williamsburg Clay Pipe
Wow...if I'd only known.
I'm new to piping at age 61 yrs. In the past few weeks I've ordered more than two dozen pipes. This "Williamsburg" and "The Dutchman" are both great pipes. I would, now, always recommend a beginner to start with a Clay pipe. So to first learn pipe smoking before moving up to briars; so to build cake before burning up a new briar. Because if you can learn to smoke, a Clay pipe, cool enough to hold onto its bowl...you are 'then' ready to smoke from a briar. I highly recommend trying at least one; The Dutchman or the Williamsburg. I added near 1.5 inches of 5/16" (8mm) heat-shrink tube to the mouth pieces of each. Cleaning them is as easy as running it through a 2 hour self-clean cycle in your oven but first, and obviously, remove the heat-shrink tubing.
