The influence of Danish pipe making on Yuwei Huang's work is evident in this Acorn interpretation as it readily calls to mind Sixten Ivarsson's iconic Peewit shape. Much like Sixten's signature design, this example is characterized by its plump, high-set waistline, strong Dublin-esque taper, and prominent heel spur underneath. I'm particularly fascinated by the sandblasted finish and how it expertly complements the bowl's shaping, with undulating patterns of ring grain radiating from the protruding heel and climbing the bowl's flanks. The rim's interior is smooth-polished and chamfered, curving gently inward to the chamber. Subtle asymmetry is also at play on this piece, with the rim's fore rising slightly higher than the near side. Stunning accent work is a common feature within Yuwei's portfolio and this offering is no different. The shank is extended by a well-grained piece of spalted maple, its light tone and unique dark streaks and lines adding to this piece's striking visuals. The base of the saddle stem mirrors the maple ferrule's subtle flare, offering a satisfying conclusion to a pipe that's rich with visual and tactile appeal.
