About This Pipe
Chubby pipes present a unique balance of proportions — stout bowls, abbreviated shanks, and trim mouthpieces must all be combined, with an attention to detail that maintains the piece's easy flow, as well as its compact, on-the-go appeal. Wojtek Pastuch has nailed this chubby Apple, with a feel in hand that is as simple as its profile is elegant. With a particularly stout-bodied bowl and plenty of soft curvature, it fills the hand pleasantly, with walls thick enough to ensure a comfortable grip; on the other end, the transition is fairly subtle, with its smooth, trim shank given just a little bit of emphasis against the piece, before the gentle, sleek saddle-stem completes the lines in a way that satisfies the eye. The finish has not been neglected, either, boasting a red-hued contrast stain for the stummel, as well as finely-patterned cumberland for the mouthpiece — the two warm pieces divided by pale, striated horn. Fantastic work all around.
