About This Pipe

One could argue that the Bulldog is one of Werner Mummert's favorite designs: His portfolio is full of distinct renditions, dominated by his signature versions that exude a crisp, architectural aesthetic. This bent rendition, however, is distinctly different. The elongated, diamond shank exhibits a slight but steady upward curve, balanced out by the saddle stem's gentle recurve, and the bowl is of the taller, more slender variety. Furthermore, instead of extending the panels of the shank into the lower bowl and heel, like his signature Bulldog shape, the German carver here terminates said panels suddenly at the transition, resulting in a defined line that highlights the bowl's Egg-like curvature. Though the bowl does feature the Bulldog's characteristic beadlines, they are low-set on this piece and don't initiate a distinct taper toward the rim — the bowl instead gradually curling inward. The rim shows a slight undulation that echoes the shank and stem's sinuosity and mimics the wavy growth rings that Mummert's deft sandblasting ability has highlighted across the stummel.
