About This Pipe
From his bold, crisply-faceted Bulldogs, to his striking Cubist Pokers, to his ultra-minimalist reverse Calabash Barrels, German carver Werner Mummert has undoubtedly ran the gamut of idiosyncratic pipe designs. In this paneled Cavalier, we see him returning to a favored aesthetic: Cubism. And though he's explored the style as a means of accentuating texture and color via multiple, crisp facets, here we see Werner using the geometry to highlight a playful juxtaposition of levels, doing so with nary a single curve to be found (save for the saddle stem). It almost goes without saying that this Rube Goldbergian offering is a stable sitter, and the pink knob at the base of the transition reveals an additional practical feature, it being removable to allow for easier cleaning. A deft fusion of form and function from the bold and unusual Mr. Mummert.
