Smooth Calabash (Viking) Tobacco Pipe

I was talking with a fellow pipe smoker and an aficionado of artisan-made briars recently, after looking over the latest batch of pieces from a maker whose work tends to lean more toward the extreme (i.e. ostentatious). We came to the agreement that, at least to our eyes, it was those pieces that, from afar, simply appeared to be well-executed renditions of classic shapes but, up close, revealed precise, crisp shaping details to the viewer as if sharing some closely-guarded secret, that consistently seemed to grab our attention.

It is with this sentiment in mind that I am currently experiencing this piece from Tonni Nielsen. Typically, the simple thought of the Calabash leads the mind to images of the most exaggerated forms in all of pipedom: from the original, sinuously curved gourds of old to the more novel descendants rendered in briar, surely very few stones have been left un-turned in the pursuit of re-imagining this time-honored shape. And yet, it's a deftly executed, gracefully curved, and altogether subtly graceful interpretation (such as this) that tends to leave the most lasting impression, at least in my opinion. The lightly-stained rim sports a gently domed form, followed by a gradually tapering bowl showcasing a stunning display of straight and flame grain, no doubt worthy of its "Viking" grade. It may not be a strictly traditional Calabash (in the sense of possessing just a single, deep chamber for tobacco), but it certainly faithfully adheres to the classic form in every other aspect.
