About This Pipe
Sinuously bent and whimsically rendered, this bent Dublin from Lasse Skovgaard demonstrates the Danish artisan's distinctive style and ability to craft flowing, organically inspired designs. The bowl's flattened, angled heel permits this piece to sit unassisted, flawlessly balanced by the high-kicking shank-and-stem combination that gracefully bends before terminating at well-engineered lip button. The domed rim is remarkably wide, providing plenty of surface area to accommodate the hypnotic array of birdseye that adorns it. I love the way in which Lasse handled the rim on this piece, its undulating orientation not only adding a playful touch in profile but also makes the bowl's canted disposition much more dramatic with the rim's back flicking upward. The rest of the stummel has been treated to a light-depth sandblast, unveiling a captivating display of ring grain that radiates from the base and perfectly follows the bowl's flare. As a subtle, yet skillful accenting touch, Skovgaard has shaped the stem base in such a way that its angled orientation echoes the bowl's flattened heel.
