About This Pipe

Nanna Ivarsson's Acorn renditions often evoke a sense of inflated geometry, the bowl looking as if it might float away from the transition. Nanna's Tomato compositions more often seem more grounded, but this piece offers the same tight transition and independent nature of the bowl that her Acorns tend to project.

There, however, the similarity recedes. This well-rounded bowl projects an organic disposition, but with a very forward-canted posture, its waistline riding high on the bowl and the rim smoothly beveled around the tobacco chamber. Three pale knuckles of bamboo comprise the shank extension in a slender reach to the short, flat, saddle mouthpiece, which is black to echo the hue of the stummel on the other side of the color-contrasting shank.

While the bowl is sandblasted in a low-profile texture, it ably accentuates the remarkable consistency of the growth rings that circumvent the shape. The rim is a broad dome that is contrasted with a smooth chamfer around the tobacco chamber, offering subtle contrast of color and texture to accompany the elegant shaping of this remarkable composition.
