Smooth Acorn with Buffalo Horn Tobacco Pipe

Mike Sebastian Bay learned how to make pipes in the workshop of none other than Tom Eltang, eventually becoming Eltang's apprentice and continuing a rich tradition of Danish pipe making. This full-bodied Acorn displays a lot of the design cues I expect from the Danish school of pipe design, with a plump bowl, conical at the top like a Rhodesian, a gradual transition, and a shank that first tapers then flares at the end.

Bay has leveraged his personal creativity to further elevate the design, adding a cleverly concave ridgeline that sweeps along the right flank of the stummel from rim to shank end. The bespoke linework continues into a thin black accent ring and flaring horn ferrule, lending an organic aesthetic both understated and well-rendered. Mike followed the grain expertly, and employed a brilliant contrast stain and smooth finish to put dense striations of flame grain on full display. I can pick out three distinct colors, with a black understain standing out well amidst orange and light auburn hues. The motif pairs well with the dark hues of the horn accent, while a lithely bent and tapered vulcanite stem featuring a trim expansion ring adds further elegance.
