Sandblasted Bent Bulldog (Leaf) Tobacco Pipe

Canadian artisan Michael Parks holds a deep respect for the pipe making traditions of old, with classic, timeless profiles well-represented in his work. His fastidious adherence to perfection is the result of nearly two decades of carving, though his passion for pipes and fine tobacco stretches back to his time in art school, and it is this perfectionist outlook that has made his work renowned in the pipe world. Each of his pipes are imbued with his own artistic approach to the individual shape, with this bent Bulldog being an excellent example of that.

I'm struck immediately by the heartiness of the bowl here as it expands from the transition to a palm-filling breadth. There's a focused emphasis on the idea of the bent Bulldog which pervades this pipe, and the bowl represents that idea by presenting as the archetypal rendition of the classic profile taken to its logical extreme. I mean "idea" in an almost nebulous way, as if to say that this pipe represents the qualities that come to mind first when one imagines a bent Bulldog, and as such the bowl here is low-slung, squat, and broad. Though it rises to nearly two inches in height, this is dwarfed by the girth of its walls, creating a profile whose low center of gravity acts as the focal point for the shape as a whole. Of course, as a piece that represents the distilled essence of the idea of the bent Bulldog, the bowl features a flare to twin beadlines set at its high waistline, followed by a domed taper to the inward-sloping rim.

The shank here is slightly different than we'd expect from this shape, eschewing the standard four-ridge diamond shape we've seen before and instead utilizing a three-ridge outline with a curved underside. This maintains the "diamond" cross-section while leaving us with a sinuous, consistent undercurve that places an emphasis on the supple, subtle curves of this pipe's outline, leading the eye invariably to the bowl. The shank and stem comprise a sleek taper from the transition, both vertically and horizontally, lending the bowl the majority of the visual weight and the composition itself an elegant fluidity. Dressing this piece is one of Parks' renowned sandblasts, revealing rippling, angled growth rings through the flanks of the bowl, with the underside covered in blasted birdseye. All of this is swathed in a vibrant auburn contrast stain that is complemented excellently by the cumberland stem.
