About This Pipe
Leveraging a background in graphic arts and an affinity for woodworking, Brazillian Luis Lavos fashions meticulously rendered compositions, taking inspiration primarily from the Danish school of design. This Volcano exhibits Lavos' characteristic style, offering a considerable curvature embellished by firm, structural aspects. The traditional Volcano is marked by a dramatically tapered bowl and a defined heel. Here, however, both of those features are altered: the bowl's usually consistent taper punctuated by a subtle flaring at the rim; the heel considerably lifted and rounded. That said, the shape's typical ridgeline remains intact, here wrapping the bowl's lower half, extending through one side of the shank, underscoring the stummel's sweeping undercurve and the base's dark, rugged sandblast. Furthermore, this ridgeline lends the shank face a lopsided build and draws attention to the junction and the steep arc of the saddle stem. Save for the sandblasted underside, the stummel wears a warm, glossy smooth finish that highlights an impressive showing of birdseye and flame grain across the briar's surface.
