About This Pipe

Born in São Paulo, Brazil, Luiz Lavos spent much of his time growing up in his grandfather's woodworking workshop and gained an affinity for the craft. When Lavos began carving pipes, he connected with several pipe making legends, such as Sabina Santos, Premal Chheda, and Hans "Former" Nielsen, and was able to draw on their knowledge to improve every aspect of his pipes. Now an excellent pipe maker in his own right, Lavos commonly crafts traditional Danish shapes and prioritizes function over flashy accents, although he occasionally incorporates organic materials into his designs.

This Lovat by Luiz Lavos is an excellent example of his traditional, no-nonsense style. A tall, erect bowl is poised at the fore, its walls tenderly tapering to a taut rim that gently chamfers inward to the chamber. Out back, the slender, cylindrical shank extends to an abbreviated saddle stem that features a striking accent of pataua seed on its base. Moreover, the stummel is dressed in a low-profile sandblast and jet-black stain, save for the rim, which is dressed in a chestnut smooth finish for contrast.
