American artisan Bill Shalosky, a Fine Arts graduate and seasoned pipe smoker, brings a wide range of influences to his work. Now an accomplished artisan at BriarWorks, he cites "every pipe ever made" as his source of inspiration. While he often favors the compact muscularity associated with American pipe making, his open-ended design philosophy results in a multitude of unique pieces, such as this handsome Cutty.

The Cutty is a classic shape that harks back to the earliest days of pipe making, when pipes were crafted from clay rather than the traditional briar. While it can be rendered in various ways, the traditional Cutty is defined by a canted, Egg-like bowl and a protruding heel spur. Bill Shalosky has skillfully reinterpreted these classic design elements in this elegant rendition. Positioned at the front of an arrow-straight shank and stem, the bowl features a lifted heel and a bold forward cant, imbuing the entire piece with a forward-urging sense of momentum. The stylized heel spur, oriented slightly toward the aft, draws attention to the transition and the tapering shank and stem, which extend gracefully behind. The slender build of the shank and stem enhances the prominence of the bowl while keeping the pipe lightweight in hand. The stummel is dressed in an auburn-hued sanblast, highlighting a striking display of flame grain throughout the bowl. A mammoth accent at the junction adds a touch of vibrancy, seamlessly tying the design together.
