Smooth Vulker with Boxwood (Turtle) Tobacco Pipe

Possibly the coolest Poker it's been my privilege to view, this piece from Gabriele Dal Fiume is modestly sized but packs enormous detail into a package just under 5 inches in length. Slender and svelte, its lines and proportions represent an interpretation that departs from the usual blocky characteristics of most Pokers. Immediately noticeable is the bowl itself, which provides a delicate concave curve on the far side, but is straight on the near side — though the impression of a curve remains. The transition is tight and natural, and the slender shank expands slightly toward the stem, with a light ring of boxwood between the cumberland fitment and mouthpiece. The very light stain highlights the grain, which is spectacular. Of course, it sits with confidence, and in such a small pipe, practicality is at the forefront. Particularly pleasing is the rounded rim. Most Pokers have a flat or plateau rim, which are the most obvious treatments, given the personalities of Pokers, but the rounded rim is elegant and a wonderful decision on the part of the maker. I'd love to see more Pokers with this combination of design elements, but for now, Gabriele is it.
