About This Pipe
Massimiliano Rimensi of Ferrara, Italy, creates pipes under the name Il Duca in honor of the historical rulers of his native city. He draws inspiration from Danish, Italian, and Anglo-French pipe-making and channels those disparate design styles through his personal creative prism, producing work that's singularly his own. This Asymmetrical Mushroom showcases Rimensi's refined craftsmanship, fluency in accenting materials, and affinity for trim, elegant lines. Up front, a stocky, full-bodied bowl stands atop a pointed, Pickaxe-like heel and grows supple walls that flare to a broad, rounded rim. Said rim introduces the asymmetry to this "Asymmetrical" design, its surface dipping and rising at odd intervals, and lending the totality of the bowl a lopsided look in profile. A wide transition follows the bowl and marks the start of a trim shank extended by three knuckles of dark bamboo. Most of the dense grass boasts a dark complexion that matches the sandblasted section of the stummel and the inky hues of the tapered mouthpiece, but the organic material's three knuckles display a lighter color that mirrors the smooth polish of the rim. With one stretch of bamboo, Rimensi has unified the entire pipe's palette into a cohesive whole, fostering a sense of visual harmony throughout the composition, despite the purposeful unevenness of the shaping.
