Sandblasted Bent Egg with Ivorite (2145) Tobacco Pipe

Based out of San Diego, California, J. Alan pipes are carved by Jeff Gracik, his style recognizable by his exquisite shaping and expert engineering. Gracik's sensibilities exude a distinctly Danish character, inclined toward sleek, flowing line work and graceful curves, all while carrying an American sense of robust compactness. This bent Egg by Jeff Gracik serves as an elegant example of his work, with the overall composition possessing a fine balance throughout. A fluid, gestural undercurve carries the design and guides the eye toward a forward-urging bowl, whose plump, supple walls readily contour to the hand. A thick, sweeping shank curls upward from the transition, flaring gradually and balancing the visual weight out back just a touch. The American carver's portfolio tends to use accenting materials sparingly but effectively, as showcased here with a broad band of smooth, creamy Ivorite adorning the shank end, its light, wispy striations tastefully accentuating the continued flare from the shank. Joined to the shank is a demurely bent saddle stem, working in concert with the pipe's diminutive length to offer a comfortable clench. Gracik's excellent finishing work is displayed here, with the stummel enveloped in a crisp, ruddy sandblast, drawing out dense waves of undulating growth rings from heel to rim with plenty of intriguing texture for the hand to appreciate.
