Partially Sandblasted Elephant's Foot with Horn (1465) Tobacco Pipe

A readily-indentifiable shape for anyone familiar with pipe history, the Elephant's Foot was originally created by Bo Nordh back in the day, but it continues to see new life as it's refined and reiterated by modern carvers. Here, this rendition from Jeff Gracik of J. Alan pipes adheres pretty faithfully to the old form while also striking a fairly unique disposition, making characteristic use of the given block's grain in the process. Indeed, the forward-rushing piece exudes a pronounced, bulging curve up front dressed in a dark, low-profile sandblast, with a more subtle arc of the same at the aft acting as a complement, framing tight, precise region of cross-grain at the left and right flanks.

This contrast-stained facet wrapping the bowl is clearly the focal point, but the stage is seemingly shared with the organic addition of a handsomely flaring horn mount. The horn is creamy and elegantly multi-hued, with shades of off-white to coffee in harmonious, striated tandem with one another. From here, a push-style stem serves to bring things to a nice, logical conclusion, while also playing with some negative space in profile. A stellar composition from the American carver.
