Smooth Apple with Mammoth (2025) Tobacco Pipe

American artisan Jared Coles grew up around his pipe-smoking grandfather, and, fondly remembering their time together, he decided to take up the hobby himself when he turned 18. It wouldn't be until several years later, during his studies at UC Irvine, that he would discover the world of artisan pipes. Mesmerized, he decided to try his hand at crafting pipes himself, and since then he has grown to be an accomplished artisan in his own right. Coles draws inspiration from styles of pipe making from all over the world, resulting in an eclectic style that's still uniquely his own.

This Apple bespeaks the artisan's Danish and American influences in particular, with its sleek silhouette, practical proportions, and hint of muscularity. The broad, plump bowl stands sturdily atop a short, muscular shank decorated with a mammoth accent. Likely the result of the "shape first, drill second" technique pioneered by Sixten Ivarsson, the grain of this piece falls seamlessly in line with the form of the stummel. The flanks are peppered with birdseye, while the fore and aft sides are decorated with curve-defining cross grain. These dynamic grain patterns are brought out by a rich auburn stain and smooth, glossy finish.
