About This Pipe
Jeff Gracik seems to favor imparting this deep sweeping gesture into the profile of quite a number of his pieces, but it's his bamboo-shanked numbers that really take the cake for me. Whenever the inclination strikes, Jeff seems to always find the most perfectly-arced, evenly-paced stretches of the stuff, incorporating them into shapes that seemed to be acutely suited to the medium's gesture. Here he clearly felt inclined to fashion one of his very forward, seemingly Japanese-inspired Volcanoes, steeped in implied momentum. It's finished in dark walnut gloss, the rounded base showing a spread of excellent birdseye. Recommended.
