About This Pipe
Sure, the clean lines and graceful contrasting curves that make up this Ray Kurusu briar are impressive on their own right: a sweeping, yet elegant take on the modern Elephant's Foot. And, of course, the slender four-knuckle bamboo extension is both dynamic and a perfect example of keeping to the rhythm of the composition. Engineering and drilling? They surely follow a similar perfectionist trend. That being said, what strikes me the most about this composition is a feat in and of itself. Simply put, it's the way Ray has orientated the briar to showcase some stellar grain.
The tapering panels along either flank and the beveled rim alike work to set a frame for some of the tightest cross-grain I, for one, have ever seen. Conversely, the slightly protruding fore acts as a stage for a wall of dancing whorls of birdseye. Together, they form something rather spectacular — a work of art in its own right.
