Smooth Jatobá with Boxwood Tobacco Pipe

Gustavo Cunha, the Brazilian artisan behind marTelo pipes, draws on a rich background in woodworking and furniture design to craft a compelling range of shapes — from refined Anglo-French classics to organic, nature-inspired forms.

Among his most celebrated signatures is the Jatobá, a shape named after and inspired by the fruit pods of the jatobazeiro tree native to Brazil. Equal parts homage to his homeland and remarkable pipe design, this particular iteration reaches impressive heights, with a bowl of Stack-like proportions standing over two inches tall. Within its organic, curvaceous frame, the bowl houses a capacious chamber, its concave fore wall and convex aft wall working together to give the entire head a sense of rearward, cresting momentum.

Out back, a sinuous shank ebbs from the low-set transition and sweeps gracefully upward to a ferrule of bright boxwood — a warm accent that complements the pipe's honey-blonde finish. Said finish highlights a lively showcase of grain, with vast fields of birdseye blanketing the bowl's flanks and tight cross grain wrapping the fore and aft.
