Sandblasted Horn with Silver Spigot Tobacco Pipe

American pipe maker Abe Herbaugh originally worked as an electric-guitar builder and repair expert before lending his talents to pipe making. From starting out carving pre-cut blocks of briar to later learning artisan techniques, Herbaugh collected a wealth of pipe-making experience that shaped him into an exceptional craftsman. Herbaugh's designs often draw comparisons to the supple aesthetics of the Danish school, and many of his pipes feature a pronounced forward-urging dynamism.

Although the Horn is traditionally a lithe and sinuous shape, this rendition by Abe Herbaugh is a muscular Nosewarmer. The hearty stummel seamlessly tapers and bends from the rim to the shank, where the briar gives way to a silver spigot mount. Said spigot results in a broader mortise, and, therefore, a thicker overall form, which serves as a sturdy complement to the stummel's exceptional width. The stem base is also fitted with a silver tenon, which provides a glimmering contrast to the stem's jet-black vulcanite. Additionally, the stummel is dressed in an inky sandblast, highlighting rugged growth rings on the flanks that arc along the flanks; however, the chamfered rim is dressed in a ruby smooth finish, offering a palpable contrast to the tactile sandblast and showcasing a a few fetching wisps of grain.
