Sabina Santos Smooth Ukulele with Mammoth (Unsmoked) Tobacco Pipe

Sabina Santos lives in Portugal and is one of the few artisan pipe makers in the region. She discovered her passion for pipe making online after leaving her corporate job. Initially, she learned through simple trial and error, but her skills quickly evolved. This journey took her to Denmark for mentorships under renowned artisan pipe makers in the region. Over several trips, she refined her craft, enhancing her skills in both finishing and shaping. Sabina combines her natural talent with an infectious enthusiasm for design, making her work stand out in the pipe-making community.

This Ukulele from Santos is an outstanding display of artisanship and ingenuity. We've seen a Ukulele from her before, but where the previous one had a domed bowl made from mammoth to resemble her Calabash designs, this particular iteration uses a Bulldog bowl. In this way, it bears some similarity to Eltang's Eskimo, but upon closer examination, we find some stark differences in the treatment of the shank-and-stem arrangement. In the side profile, one can see that thin panels flank the shank of Santos's Ukulele, in contrast to the ridgelines on many of Eltang's Eskimos. From above, the most obvious difference is that, instead of shaping the shank so that it tapers into the stem, Santos has it maintain its width from the transition into the colorful accent at the aft.

In typical Sabina Santos style, the shank end is accented with a multi-hued array of Mammoth, adding a pop of color to the piece. Santos did a phenomenal job reading the briar when she chose this shape, as it displays a beautiful array of grain throughout.
